5: Father and Son

Jake stared at up his father's tall wide form. "No...I said no! You've always held me back for doing the things I've wanted to do! I'm 16. I'm old enough to take care of myself. Why don't you just leave me be?", Jake said to his father, furious. "I don't want to lose you like I lost your mother! We all know how dangerous it is in Coex, and I don't want you to join her too soon. I will be honest with you. You are weak. You will die out here...", Jake's father said.

Jake's eyes began dripping small tears. "3 days. I've been out here on my own for 3 whole days without a scratch! I'm not 5 anymore, and I'm not weak either". Jake's father takes out a pokeball. "Would you want me to test you?", Jake's father said. Jake takes out his pokeball and nods.

Jake, his father, and Drayko head to a battlefield and they stand on opposite sides, waiting to battle. "You be the ref, kid", Jake's father said to Drayko. "But I just got here!", Drayko replied with. "Fine, kid. Just watch us then. Odomok, come on out!", Jake's father said and throws the pokeball to the battlefield, sending out his Pokémon.

Drayko looks at Odomok. It's reptilian and it's scales are a dark green in color with dark purple streaks on its body. It's amber eyes glare at Jake and roars. "I've never seen an Odomok before...", Drayko thought to himself. Drayko scanned the Pokémon with his Pokédex.

"Odomok: the Komodo dragon Pokémon. A dragon and poison type. This Pokémon is known to poison its foes by its painful bite. People that survive it's bites are forced to get their limbs amputated due to a deadly infection. This Pokémon inhabits deserts and a few inhabit swamps, but this is very rare", the Pokédex said.

Drayko shuddered by the thought and appearance of Odomok. "Scalaby, let's go!". Jake had determination in his eyes and threw his pokeball, sending his Scalaby. It's a small dragon-like Pokémon standing on 2 clawed feet. It's scales are grey and it's underbelly is a light blue. It gave a cute screech. Drayko scanned it with the Pokédex.

"Scalaby: the young dragon Pokémon. A dragon type. This Pokémon wanders about, searching for playmates. It tends to playfully nibble on people's legs and cling onto them. Without removal of the Scalaby, it can chew through bone. It is found in mountains not far from Scalord, which is its final evolved form".

"Odomok, use Flamethrower!", Commanded Jake's father. Scalaby dodges and uses scratch and takes a hit on Odomok. "Great work, Scalaby! Now use scratch again!", Jake said, pumped from the battle. Scalaby uses scratch, but misses. Odomok grabs Scalaby firmly and uses flamethrower right in Scalaby's face, causing a critical hit. Scalaby faints.

"What did I tell you, son? Now you're coming home NOW", Jake's father said to his son. Drayko stomps onto the battlefield. "Hold it, sir", Drayko demanded. Jake's father turned around and smirks. "I want you to battle me. If Jake isn't strong enough, I want to show you that I'm strong enough for him to travel with me...as a friend". Drayko realized what he just said and turns to Jake. He smiles at Drayko and nods lightly. "Do it", said Jake.

Jake's father nods and steps on the battlefield, sending out his Odomok. "Alright Orqua. Give everything you've got!", Drayko said as he threw Orqua's pokeball, sending it out. Jake's father looks at Orqua and grins. "You really are a rookie. You go first, kid", Jake's father said amusingly.

"Use water gun!", Drayko demanded. Orqua fires a powerful jet of water and it hits Odomok in his stomach. "Great work! Now use tackle!". Odomok grabs Orqua and uses headbutt. "Oh no...use water gun!". Odomok still held Orqua firmly, and Drayko used that as an advantage. Orqua fires another water gun attack and Odomok is getting exhausted.

"Odomok, we can't lose to some kid. Use flamethrower!". Orqua uses water gun to counter the flamethrower. Due to water having an advantage over fire, the water gun attack easily overpowered the flamethrower and makes a critical hit onto Odomok. Odomok barely stands up with its shaking legs...and finally faints.

Jake looks at Drayko and smiles. Meanwhile, Jake's father looks at his fainted Pokémon and collapses on his knees. "Y-You've beat me...", Jake's father said. He then smiles and looks up at Drayko. "Not bad for a rookie. Jake, I trust you enough for you to be on your own. I do this because I love you, but I was too blind and couldn't see how you really felt. Follow your dreams, son. Make new friends, like the one who defeated me. I love you son", Jake's father stands up and pulls his son into a hug. Jake gives Drayko the thumbs up and smiles.

As Jake's father is about to leave, he turns to Drayko. "I wish the best of luck for both of you. Come visit my gym after you've acquired 2 badges. I recommend you go to Simex City for your first gym badge. Farewell, and see you sometime in the future". "Sir, I never got your name", Drayko said. "Tristan's the name. I must go back to Drako Village. Goodbye", Tristan said as he spread his wide wings. He then takes flight and soars through the sky, flying towards what appears to be a mountain range in the distance.

"Now that I'm finally free, what do we do now?", asked Jake. Drayko looks at Route 1's path that is covered in thick forests. "To Simex City for my first gym badge!".
