CHAPTER 12:

RIN’s POV

“Those are your rings.”

Those are your rings.

Those words kept ringing in my ears.

I just can’t understand why are those ours?

“Knowing you my boy, I did not say anything what this meeting is really all about,” Marcus’ mom began.

“Our families have a very long history and the ties we have and will still have is something that was made out of friendship. Friendship that each family has valued. These rings have been the start of everything.” Mrs. Cho said while gesturing to the rings inside the box that’s on my palm.

“It took your grandfathers almost their whole lives to watch their children grow and see if they could actually create a great match between those offsprings. But sadly, they both had male children. But quite as lucky as we are now, we have you, our children to fulfill the promise.” My mom continued.

Wait…

“We’d want to make everything clear and official, that’s why we decided to meet here. We would really be so glad if we could get the two of you as a match… that’s why, we decided to pair you up, and get you married eventually in the future.” Mrs. Cho explained and then smiled at the both of us.

WAIT!

“Mwo?!!!! MARRIED?!” The two of us shouted.

“OMMA!” I shouted at my mom.

“I know that this has been all too sudden my dear, but don’t be too mad. We are just carrying out your grandfathers’ wishes.” My mom explained to me.

But that even made what annoyance I am feeling even worse.

“Forgive me for my rudeness but… I think it’s not something for our parents to force us into something we don’t want.” I blurted out.

“You’d better think twice about what you had just said honey. As of now, you don’t have power over us. We’ve already given you liberty to do all you wanted to do, and now I hope you could actually return us the favor. We’ve been planning everything all along. We just waited for the two of you to be ready.” Mom said with conviction.

Mom.

How come of all people, you would be like this to me?

“Now you guys give me so many headaches. Seriously, when will this game stop? I can’t simply accept this. Mom, I’m sorry but I refuse to agree to what you all said.” Marcus said looking straight at his mom.

“I will not marry a person that I don’t love.” Marcus finally blurted out.

He stood up and then he left without a word.

“Hey, get back!”

I was still in disbelief that I just stared at him motionless.

I will not marry a person that I don’t love.

Those words resounded in my head, as much as the topic of marriage keeps bugging me.

He is right. Maybe.

Marrying a person one doesn’t like is like selling yourself off to someone only to suffer. I just can’t imagine myself with someone I would never give my heart to. That’s why that’s the least thing I would ever do.

Maybe, what Marcus feels is just how I feel too.

“Look at your son! He’s been so stubborn and disrespectful!” Mr. Cho told Mrs. Cho with much annoyance in his face.
