Luna did not have it handled.
She knew that when she told Harrison, she thought she'd have it all handled, but a small part of her knew that not even she was going to be able to calm down the anger that Liz Barns held inside of her. Liz was unable to sit still as they waited for Mia to arrive at the apartment, the first mistake Luna made was ignoring that small detail.
They'd convinced Mia that Luna had gotten a deal for a spa nearby, and with a lot of convincing, Mia agreed on said spa day. It'd been ages since the three hung out without Mia disappearing halfway through to tend to her boyfriend, whom had no clue she was busy as she never bothered to inform him. It may not seem all that bad, but when your childhood best friend is slowly pushing you away for a guy she's only known for a little over a year, it hurt. Luna tried to hide it more than Liz did, but it was slowly becoming unbearable to act as if her being disregarded didn't hurt her.
Eventually the time came, and Mia was walking into the apartment, gushing about how she didn't want to be late for her day of pampering. Then they revealed that it was all a hoax, and she wasn't going to be massaged by some woman with "magic hands" like they'd promised.
She knew Mia was always the clueless one in their friendship trio, but today, she seemed even more clueless than usual. And with the little patience Liz had, this made the events take a turn for the worse.
The speech Luna had spent hours rehearsing in front of her mirror, and to Tom, the night before was useless now. Liz snapped at the girl, complaints tumbling from her lips about Mia and how the two girls were being treated. Luna watched the ordeal with wide eyes, not expecting Liz to be so venomous, speaking to their best friend as if she was a stranger who'd threatened to fight them in the middle of a club.
Her second mistake was staying silent after Liz finished. She should have spoken up, lessened the blow from all of Liz's words, told Mia in a soft voice that though what Liz said was true, their intentions weren't to make her feel bad. But she didn't. She was too in shock to blurt out whatever she could remember of her prepared speech. Her silence gave Mia the chance to speak, the girl disagreeing with every little thing Liz said.
This brought on a full on argument, Luna's head moving from right to left as the girls spat at one another. They were shouting insults, complaints, things she was sure they'd regret if they actually listened to what they were saying. She was left powerless in the situation, not able to get a single word in without it being overpowered by a shout from another girl.
"You're so caught up in your love life that you aren't paying attention to anything but him," Liz shouted over Mia's voice, Mia falling silent for a moment. "Snap out of it, or it'll crash and burn."
When Mia was completely silent, Luna allowed the smallest bit of hope to fill her. Maybe this little spat would actually have a positive outcome, maybe all of Liz's yelling had actually gotten through to her. Yet, as fast as the hope appeared, it was gone.
Mia blinked. "I know what this is about." She took a step towards Liz, Luna watching with baited breathe, almost afraid of what was to come. "You're jealous." Luna's face completely fell, and that was her third mistake. She reacted. Mia's head snapped to Luna, a mocking smile settling on her face. "Luna's face says it all, you are jealous!"
Liz was glaring at the girl, letting out a heavy breathe as her fingers curled into fists at her side. "I am not jealous," She stated calmly, and Luna began gnawing on her bottom lip, knowing that angry Liz was much better than calm Liz.
"Oh no, you most definitely are," Mia scoffed, crossing her arms. "Lemme guess. Still not over that crush you had on me?" Something flashed in Liz's eyes, and Luna didn't hesitate to grab Liz's wrist, shaking her head softly. "That is it! Of course you're jealous of my relationship, this whole thing was just for that."
"I have a girlfriend, Mia," She responded with gritted teeth, her harsh glare still settled on her friend. "Why would I have a crush on you?"
"You tell me Elizabeth," Mia rolled her eyes.
Liz shook off Luna's hold on her, and a wave of panic washed over Luna, not prepared to have to pull her best friend off of her other best friend. "I'm leaving," Liz announced, glancing down to Luna, who looked defeated. "She's your problem now, I'm done trying." With that, she walked down the hall to go retrieve her things from her room.
Luna looked to Mia hopelessly, who simply shrugged. "We figured out the problem is Liz, so I'm out of here." With that, Mia grabbed her bag from the couch, and left Luna's apartment. Luna sat completely still on the couch, not even reacting as Liz walked past her, mumbling a goodbye to the girl.
Her apartment was empty for all of five minutes before she bursted into tears. Tears of frustration. Tears of anger. Tears of sadness. It was somehow a combination of all three, but Luna knew she couldn't do anything about the situation but cry. She just sat there and listened to her best friends ruin their friendship, and she did nothing to stop it. Though she couldn't have stopped the inevitable, she felt as if the whole thing was her fault. It didn't take her long to wander to her bedroom, her hands shaking and cheeks tear stained.
Picking up her phone, she called the one person who knew what was meant to go down today. Tom answered the call, and an image of the girl with her knees to her chest, and bottom lip trembling appeared on his screen. "Everything went to shit, and I didn't even stop it," She mumbled, already feeling tears well up in her eyes once more.
