Luna Giraldo was many things. She was caring, always seeming to put others before herself. She was passionate, always fully immersing herself in whatever she was working on. She was a good listener, looking into every word that left a person's mouth and attempting to understand what it meant.
But, maybe that was her problem. She looked into things too much, giving things a meaning that they didn't hold in the first place. She spent the night thinking over Mia's words, falling asleep with the words still on repeat like a broken record. That night had given her too much to think about, too much time to think about things, and as her hands began to shake, she felt as if she'd be regretting what she was about to do.
Though this feeling of regret wasn't enough to stop her. She was doing it for him, not for her; he needed this. The regret was quickly pushed back, a shaky sigh leaving her already quivering lips as she unlocked her phone.
When his smiling face appeared on her screen, she had to fight back her own smile, momentarily forgetting what she had called for. "Hey, was everything okay last night? You look tired."
Her heart panged as concern flushed over his features, and she was barely able to nod. "It was fine, look, I need to talk to you about something." The knot in her throat made it much harder to speak, and she tucked her shaking hands beneath her thighs.
He nodded, leaning his head against his hand, prepared to listen to the girl. He couldn't deny he had been expecting her to speak of something that Mia told her, or share a story he hadn't heard since they last facetimed. But when the words "maybe we should take a break" tumbled from her lips, he was instantly sitting up, eyes wide.
"W-What?"
She released a shaky breathe, meekly nodding. "Yeah," She said softly, a pain in her chest as sadness overtook his features. "My talk with Mia really opened my eyes... this'll be good for us."
His mouth opened and closed multiple times, words unable to make its way out. And when his bottom lip began trembling, he was quick to look away from the screen. But Luna saw. She saw there were tears gathering in his eyes, because a break was never simply a break. A break was a break-up, one that had the possibility of not coming to an end.
"So that's it?" His voice was low, unable to look back at the screen.
Her own tears spilled over, and she nodded. "I'm sorry," She whispered. "I just-"
"It's fine," His voice cracked, because no, it wasn't fine. It wasn't fine that their relationship was "on a break" for no reason. It wasn't fine that his heart felt as if it'd fallen to the pits of his stomach. It wasn't fine that the two were both holding back tears, yet neither voiced their distaste for said "break." Tom cleared his throat. "I'll just uh..."
"Bye Tom."
"Bye Luna."
It took the boy all of ten seconds to process what just happened, and his tears were quick to spill over. It wasn't long before Harrison made his way to Tom's trailer, shocked to find his best friend staring blankly at the wall with tear filled eyes. After a couple minutes of silence, Harrison managed to get an explanation out of boy, and when he did, he was quick to hug his best friend until he calmed down.
He felt as if the whole world seemed to be against him at this moment, everything seeming to come crashing down around him. Because there was nothing more heart wrenching than having the woman you're in love with say she needs a break from you. He wanted to call her back, tell her he loved her too much to let this happen to them, that he didn't want to take a break that would inevitably end their relationship, remind her of their plans for the future. But he couldn't. Because she needed her space, she needed a break from him, and the last thing he wanted to do was push her farther away.
When Liz Barns received a text from Harrison saying to check on Luna, she immediately assumed the worst. And what she found was the worst. Luna wrapped herself in a blanket, her small body curled up as cries left her lips. Liz was quick to rush to her side, asking the girl what happened, if she was injured, if she could do anything to help her. Yet all Luna did was roll over, tears streaming freely.
Liz stared with parted lips, and when a cry left Luna's lips, she felt a tug at her heart. Nobody deserved to be sad, Luna Giraldo especially.
