Chapter 24.5: Challenge Accepted

As I was getting for bed in the bathroom, I looked at my wrist. It’s all dried up now, and man, it’s night time, meaning, I’m leaving tomorrow.

I walked out, and I see Luke on the coach, playing with his guitar.

“Hey there, musician.” I sat next to him, “Like to play me a song?”

Luke smiled at me, “Should I after the way you made fun of me earlier?”

“Oh come on!” I nudged him, “It was for fun.”


“I know,” Luke nodded, “I know. So, what song do you want?”

“Surprise me.” I smiled at him, and he started strumming, “I see, a challenge? Challenge Accepted, Malulani.”

“Give me a song that I would best describe this moment right here.”

He was strumming some more, and grinned really wide, “I got it.”

Then he started playing “Everything I want”

Ah, Oldie but Goldie right here.

As he was signing, he kept looking forward or at his guitar, then when it reached the chorus for the final time, Luke finally looked at me, and gave me that dazed smile.

“But you are everything I want
And everything I need

I can barely breathe
When we wake up in the morning,

We sail the high seas

We can always be
I just wanna call you mine..”

I bit my lower lip, trying to restrain myself. Luke was staring at me, then played with his lip ring, “So, Ashton told me about us not really being official.”

I slapped my forehead, “Remind me to never tell Ashton anything anymore.”

He shrugged, “I mean, if it wasn’t for him, we probably wouldn’t be where we are now.”

“That’s very true.” I nodded, “Well, I said that because I heard you talking about how we wouldn’t work out because you’re gonna be in Australia while I’m in San Francisco and you’re a rockstar while I’m-” and Luke, oh Luke, shut me up by kissing me.

Out of habit, I traced my fingers on his jawline, and he put his hand on my hip.

When he pulled away, he rested his forehead against mine, smiling.

“You know,” I said in a low voice, “You really have to stop doing that.”

“Doing what?”

“Interrupting me when I’m talking.”

“Yeah, but don’t say that you didn’t enjoy me stopping you up like that.”

I rolled my eyes, “Well, I was trying to make a point that-”

“Sounds completely ridiculous and want a better reason why you can’t be my girlfriend.”

“Aren’t you at all phased that your fans will hate that you’ll be taken and that we’ll have a long distance relationship?”


“Hate is such a big word, Lani.” Luke started giggling, “It’s not gonna be that bad.”

“That’s true but Luke, you said so yourself that we might not work out.”

He sighed and leaned back against the couch, “I know, I know. I mean, that was before, but,” he put his hand on top of mine, “I don’t know what every day will be like without you in it.”

“I can’t imagine either.” I sighed, as I snuggled next to Luke as he put his arm around my shoulder and I wrapped mine around his waist.

“Do you want us to be official?” He asked me, and I nodded, “More than anything.”

“Do you want to be my girlfriend?”

“Isn’t that the same question?” I giggled, and he scoffed, “Don’t ruin the moment by being a smart ass.”

I started laughing, “Yes, I want to be your girlfriend.”

Luke kissed my head, and said, “I’ll have to ask you in a proper way then.”


“Proper? I’m leaving tomorrow.”

“I know you are but I don’t want to ask you in a last minute way. I want it to be spontaneous. Just so I can impress you even more.”

“You remembered that?” I asked in surprised. It was a small hint from that time he injured his hand.

“How can I not? I seriously thought to myself, ‘Okay Hemmings, don’t forget that. She’s obviously hinting it’ and I was right.”

“You’re not as oblivious as I thought.” I chuckled, and he pulled me close, “Look whose talking Miss I seriously thought he was confused.”

“Oh god, that creeper guy.” I covered my face, “That was interesting.”

“I know, and that’s when I first kissed your forehead.”

I put my hand on his chest now, and sighed, “Yeah, I remember how I freaked out when you did that.”

“You freaked out?”

“Well, I didn’t see it coming! You couldn’t tell?”


“No, you were being so chill about it.”

I scoffed, “Heh, I was anything but chill.”

“I can’t believe that was only a couple weeks of go. That was your second day with us.”

“Yeah, it feels like it’s been months since it last happened.” then I yawned.

“Getting sleepy?”

I looked at him, and he was already looking at me, “No, I don’t want to go to sleep.”

“Why not?” He chuckled.

I sighed, “Because once I wake up, it’s my last day with you.”

“Oh Lani,” he started hugging me, “Just enjoy what’s happening right now. Just you and me-”

“And three other guys who are sleeping in their bunks and my tour bus driving uncle.”

“Laaaani.” He groaned and squeezed me.

I started laughing, “I’m sooooorry! I couldn’t help it.”

“I know, but seriously, we should get some sleep. We still have a gig tomorrow.”

“That’s true.” I nodded, and we both headed to his bunk.

“Comfy?” He asked me as he put his arm around at my shoulder, pulling me in, and letting me rest my head on his chest.

I smiled, “You have no idea.”

“I think I have an idea.”

Everything was quiet till Luke asked, “Can you sing to me?”

I sighed, “Do I have to?”

“It’s our last night together.” Luke said in a low voice. I looked up at Luke who was just staring at forward.

I went up to his face, and I whispered, “Have any request?”

He turned his face to me, and smiled, “Surprise me.”

“Challenge accepted.”

“Give me a song that describes our story, how we got together.”

I thought about it. How we started out which was bumping heads to each other, that one time hanging out at the grocery store, the fun time at Japan town and taking pictures at the photo booth together, the way Luke tried impress me for the first time, when I got sick because Luke wanted to win me a penguin, our stupid confusion of each other. All this lead to where we are right now.

Even though it took us most of the tour, I know that I’m ready for whatever comes at me.  I was terrified of the out come, how I could possibly hurt myself and risk everything, but now, everything has changed. I want Luke to be here with me now. I’ll do whatever Luke is up for because I’m not scared anymore. Everyone was right, Luke is my new beginning. Thinking about this made me thought of the perfect song.

“It’s such a sick obsession,
And now you’ve got the best of me,
I’ve got the worst intentions,
So call me over set me free.

I can give you what you want.”

Luke raised his eyebrows at me, and said, “You skipped a couple verses.”


“Shhh.” I hushed him, “Don’t be a smart ass with me. I’m singing to you.”’

He closed his mouth, and just stayed quiet.

As I was singing, Luke would play with his lip ring, and just stare at my eyes.

I finally reached to the last chorus,

“It’s taking me over,
I don’t wanna play this game no more,
All you gotta do is tell me right now,
You want me right now, come on,
Give me the green light,
We could have all night,
If you just say the word,
Tell me it’s alright,
Give me the green light.”

When I was done, Luke cupped my cheek and said, “I’ll make you mine. I’ll ask you in the most special way possible, and I’ll make us official. I’ll tell the world, and I promise you that everything will be alright. You and me. That there’s nothing to be scared of. That’s my green light for you.”

I put my hand on top of his, holding on to it, “I’m gonna miss you, Luke.”

He smiled at me, “I’m gonna miss you too, Malulani. More than anything.” Then he kissed me.

Luke put his hand on the back of my neck while I moved my hand on his chest, holding on to his shirt. I don’t know if it’s because I’m leaving but this kiss was more sensual than usual. When we parted, he gave me a quick peck, and put his head on top of mine, holding on to me.

“Good night, Malulani.”

“Good night, Hemmings.”

THIS JUST HALF OF THE CHAPTER BECAUSE SERIOUSLY, IT MAKES ME SO SAD THAT LANI IS LEAVING. THIS IS JUST A RECAP OF MOST OF THE THINGS THAT HAPPENED BETWEEN THEM. I FEEL LIKE I'VE SEEN THEM GROW FROM BEING SOMETHING SO AWKWARD TO ANNOYINGLY CONFUSING TO SOMETHING SO BEAUTIFUL.

UGH, I JUST COULDN'T HELP. I KNOW IT'S A SLOW PACE BUT BEAR WITH ME. I'M JUST SO SAD.
