Chapter 41

Aria~

"I can see that you remember more things now " Xavier tells me

"It's true! I can remember almost everything " I say

"Aria " he calls my name

"Hmm?"

"When you were on the fence it felt like you were zoned out. I was calling your name over and over but I never got a reply " he tells me and I avert my eyes from his face.

"What happened?" He asks me but I remain silent.

"I am not going to force you to tell me. You can explain whenever you are ready " he says

"It's a long story " I mumble

"We have time " he replies and changes his position.

*Flashback *

I shake Violet's body, trying to make her open her eyes. She never responds to me. Her eyes remain closed. Violet is the only friend that I have. She is the only one that understands me. I am myself when I am with her. All the other girls at school are mean and I don't like any of them. The first day that I met Violet was about 2 years ago in a playground. I was there with my parents. We wanted to spend some time together as a family so we went out for lunch. There was a playground across the restaurant. That's where I met Violet. She didn't talk much. She was extremely quiet and very shy. I found out that she lived only a few metres away from my house. We used to play together every single afternoon. Today we are playing with other children.

They are chasing us so we are trying to hide. But now I can't hide. Violet is not playing fair. She is pretending that she is hurt.

"Violet stop playing around! We have to hide " I whisper to her but she doesn't reply.

"I found them ' someone yells from behind me. I look up the wall and see Anthony. He is the leader of the enemy team. 

"Aria and Violet are here " he shouts as he climbs back down and stands next to me.

"Aria why is she on the ground? " Anthony asks me

"She is joking " I say

"Are you sure ?" He asks me

"Yes! She just fell down but she doesn't look hurt, does she ?" I ask him

"I don't know " he shrugs. Other kids climb down the wall and approach us.

"What happened to her ?" Emily asks

"She is pretending to be hurt " Anthony tells her and everyone laughs.

"Guys " Samantha says and all of us look at her as she walks closer to me.

"I don't think she is pretending " she tells us as she leans down next to me.

"Somebody call for help " she says and almost everyone climbs up the wall and  disappears behind it, running like maniacs so they can find someone who can help.

"Will she be okay ?" I ask her

"I am not sure Aria " she tells me

"She has to be okay " I whisper and Anthony puts his small hand on my shoulder.

"Don't worry Aria " he says and gives me a smile.

"Hurry up " someone shouts from the other side of the wall.

"How did you climb up here " a male voice says.

"Just hurry up please " Emily tells him as she walks closer to us. A man around my dad's age appears and he quickly walks towards us as he kneels down.

"Oh my God " he exclaims.

"Will she be alright? " I ask him and he looks right into my eyes without answering.

"She... We have to take her to the doctor. " he says and lifts Violet up. He climbs back up the wall carefully, still holding her in his arms. We follow him as we run to catch up his fast movement.

When we reach the doctor the don't let any of us inside. We patiently stay outside.

"I will go and tell her that she won so she can open her eyes and stop pretending " Anthony whisper to me and I nod.

He stands up and walks inside the doctor's office. He comes back a minute later, his eyes fixed on the floor.

"Did she open her eyes ?" I ask him but he remains silent.

"Anthony? "

"She is dead guys " Anthony whispers and I gasp. Emily hugs me tight. The front door slams open and Violet's parents storm inside.

"Where is she ?" Her mum whisper as she frantically looks around the room. Her eyes spot me and she runs to my side.

"Aria where is she ?" She asks me

"She is in there " I show her the door and she walks in there, her husband following her.

"Let's go Aria " Anthony says and he pushes me outside.

This can not be real

*End of Flashback *

"I am not afraid of heights. I never was. But when I was climbing down the fence, I remembered that scene. It felt like she was next to me. I couldn't see where I was going so that's how I fell " I explain as him and he looks at me right into my eyes. I can't tell what his eyes are hiding.

"That same day when I went back home, I was really upset. I left Anthony and I went to find my mum. When I opened the back door I found my mum in the kitchen crying. I didn't know what was wrong. I thought that she found out about Violet and she was upset as well. When her eyes met mine, I could see the pain in her eyes, I could sense that something was wrong. I asked her if she heard about Violet but she didn't know anything about her. The same day that I lost my best friend my dad died. It was a huge shock. I was only 6 and that was something that I could not handle. When my mum told me about my dad, I left the house. I went to that old bench in our park that me and Violet used to sit. It was hidden so only me, Violet and my dad knew about it. I used to go there when my mum was mad at me. I wanted to let her calm down first and then I would go home. My dad followed me one day so that's how he found out. I know I've said it before but I'll say it again. Everyone that I love goes away in the end "
