Selena’s POV:

“Why can’t I feel my legs?” Sophia asked, tears rolling down her cheek. We all stared at each other, knowing the reason why but not knowing how to tell her.

“Selena, go call the doctor back please,” Brian told me. I nodded my head and then walked out of the room to look for the doctor.

“Dr. Brent,” I said when I saw him, “We need you back in Sophia’s room.”

“What is it Selena?” he asked.

“Sophia asked us we she couldn’t feel her legs,” I explained, tears started piling up. We both walked back to Sophia’s room. The doctor walked towards Sophia’s bed while I went to stand next to my mom and dad.

“Sophia,” the doctor said, “it seems that one of the bullets hit your spinal chord.”

“What does that mean?” she asked back.

“Well,” he paused, “it looks like you are paralyzed from the waist down sweetie. I’m sorry.”

“W-what?!” she yelled back, crying hysterically. “No! What about softball! What about prom and graduation?! Nobody is going to want me anymore!” she cried, covering her face with her hands.

I sat next to Sophia on her bed and tried to move her hands from her face. “Leave me alone Selena!” she yelled to me. She had never yelled at me before and even though it hurt, I knew how mad she was. I got up from her bed and walked to Justin. He wrapped his arms around me, knowing that I was hurt that Sophia yelled at me. “Just give her, her space Sel,” he whispered to me, giving me a kiss on my forehead.

The doctor took out something from his folder and moved the blankets away from Sophia’s legs. He poked Sophia’s feet with a small needle.

“Ow!” Sophia cried, looking at the doctor to see what he was doing. “What did you do that for?!”

We all looked at the doctor, noticing that Sophia’s felt the needle poking at her feet. “Wait, how did I feel that?” she asked.

“Well it looks like you are partially paralyzed.” he said. “That means that you do have some feeling in your legs and eventually you can start walking again, but you are going to have to go through intensive therapy.”

“So then, I would be able to play softball again?” she asked quickly.

“I’m sorry Sophia. It’s going to take you a couple of years to even start walking again, let alone running.” the doctor explained. We all walked to Sophia’s bed and gave her a kiss. “We’re going to get through this together Sophia,” my mom told her.

-

A week had passed already and Sophia was finally getting released from the hospital.

“She needs to take it easy until her wounds heal and then we’ll start therapy,” the doctor told my mom and Brian. “Her wounds needs to be cleaned two times a day and make sure the gauzes are being changed constantly.”

A nurse had walked into the room with Sophia’s wheelchair.

“Sel, where did all this flowers come from?” Sophia asked as I brushed her hair.

“Those are from Scooter,” I said pointing to the yellow daises he had brought, “ those are from Kenny, those are from mom and dad Lily and me, those are from Justin, those are from Fredo, those are from your softball team, those are from your school, and those are from Taylor,” I said.

“Who’s Taylor?” she asked me confused.

“Taylor Swift,” I replied.

“Taylor Swift brought me flowers!” she yelled excitedly. “No way!”

“Haha yeah, she came to visit you. She said you looked like me,” I told her.

“Alright, ready to go?” the nurse interrupted us.

“Oh yeah! No offense but I’m getting tired of this hospital food,” Sophia said. Brian carefully picked Sophia up from her bed, trying his best not to hurt her.

“Ow,” Sophia whispered as she sat down on the wheelchair.

“Sorry sweetie,” Brian apologized.

“It’s ok dad. It wasn’t you. These damn cuts hurt.” she said. “Sel, can you give me my bear?” she asked me pointing to the bear the Fredo had bought her. I gave her the bear and then my mom put a blanket on her.

“Cover yourself with this when we get outside, the nurse said that there were paparazzi waiting.” my mom said. All the nurses helped carry all the things that were sent to Sophia and Brian pushed the wheelchair. Sophia grabbed my hand as walked through the hospital. As we got near the door, Brian carefully picked Sophia up in his arms, and I put the blanket over her. The security guards pushed the paps back, trying to make room for us. I got in the car first and then Brian carefully put Sophia in. I bought my arms around her chest and carefully pushed her inside towards me. My mom grabbed her legs and laid them on the seat.

“Well this sucks,” Sophia said, taking off the blanket.

“What?” I asked her.

“You guys have to do everything for me now.” she sighed. “I’m sorry.”

“Sophia Lynn we are family! Don’t you ever feel like you are a burden to us!” my mom said sternly. Sophia looked at me and giggled, seeing how upset my mom got.

“Haha you got in trouble,” I teased her, sticking out my tongue.

“Selena Marie, you better stop teasing your sister,” she told me.

Sophia and I both looked at each other, finding it funny that my mom was getting mad at us. Sophia leaned her head on my shoulder and I put my head on hers as we drove home.
