Starting a new job was never easy, especially when it was an already very tight knit group as they were. They had all been friends for years and it was rather nerve wracking to try and take a place within their ranks when they had established their relationships long ago. It didn't help that you had only joined at the beginning of December and it was Christmas Day. Living amongst the group meant you were to spend the festive season with them, but as you had joined them so recently no one had really planned for you to be there.
Not wanting to get in the way, as everyone seemed rather happy you did your best to make an escape to your room. They were a nice bunch but everyone seemed happy without you. Fareeha was sat with Angela, cuddled up by the fire; Fareeha's Mother, Ana was mirroring her daughter having cuddled up with Reinhardt; Hana and Lucio were playing a video game that Hana had received for Christmas and Mei was watching Snowball create the White Christmas everyone wanted.
You were sure that they would have been happy to accommodate you; they just seemed very happy and you didn't want to risk ruining that.
Assuming no one would notice, you had made your way into your bedroom. It was still very plain; you hadn't had the chance to decorate yet but you didn't mind much. You sat on your bed, trying to keep your focus on a book that you hadn't read before, however you felt solemn that you were to spend your Christmas alone and apart from anyone. Even escaping to a different world through literature seemed impossible.
Reading over the same line numerous amounts of times, you were almost grateful to be knocked out of it by a gentle tap to the door. You paused, trying to stay silent, contemplating if it were to be better if whomever it was left you alone.
"Y/N, it's me, Mei," said the gentle voice behind the door.
Mei was too sweet to deny. You didn't know her overly well, however you weren't going to seem like a complete cow, as out of anyone on the team, she was likely the one who you'd get along with best.
"Come in," you said softly.
The door opened slightly, allowing Snowball to zoom into the room flying around a bit before settling on the bed in front of you. Mei followed, a kind smile on her lips, a plate in her left hand and a small present in her right.
The plate held about a dozen sugar cookies, decorated for the festive season, and the gift was easily cupped in her hand, wrapped to perfection.
"What are you doing in here?" She asked, trying not to overstep her boundaries.
"Oh... I didn't want to get in the way of you guys. You all seemed so happy," you whispered.
As the words left your lips, you realised how stupid you sounded. Why would it ruin their happiness, in you being happy with them?
"You wouldn't get in the way. You may be new, but you're already part of the family," she smiled warmly.
You shrugged your shoulders, not knowing how to argue that point. You didn't feel like you were part of the family, but you hadn't tried to be part of that.
"If you don't want to join us that is fine. I know it can be a bit overwhelming. So, I brought you a little Christmas survival kit. There's enough of these cookies to go around, so feel welcome to grab more if you finish these. We also had no idea what to get you as we don't know you too well, so we all chipped in on a gift, and hope that you like it," she smiled placing both objects onto your bed, taking a seat on it too, pulling Snowball onto her lap.
You couldn't help but smile at her. She was overly sweet.
"Thank you, Mei. You guys shouldn't have."
"We had to," she grinned. "It's Christmas, it's the time of giving. And even though we don't know you too well, you're one of us, and that means a lot."
"Thank you," you smiled, knowing that this was the start to a perfect friendship and non-biological family.
