"Every time she gets on that plane I never know if she's going to come back alive... or at all." Fareeha stared at the holographic map that lay sprawled out in front of her, she ran her fingers along the Middle East, stopping once she reached Qatar and bringing up years and years of data in front of her.
"She's the hardest one in here... You know there's nothing that Talon or anybody else could throw at her that she wouldn't be able to take." Fareeha brushed most of the information, leaving only recent disruptions and attacks that had happened within the hostile state.
"That isn't what I mean Y/N. This wouldn't be the first time she packed up and left. No note, no trace... nothing." Her eyes darted between the incidents and the communication update log that her mother had been informed to fill out.
"The worlds a different place now Fareeha. She wouldn't do that to you or to us."
"Why not?"
"You know why she had to leave last time." Fareeha closed the map completely and walked over to a more archaic corkboard, pins and string linked people to places in a scrambled mess of information and rumours.
Her fingers danced from string to string. "Do you know where she is now?"
"She's in Qatar, tracking down some drug runner. You know that."
"But do you know where she is?" You tried to recall if you knew her exact route, or exactly where her extraction point was, but you had never been told that information.
"That's need to know information Fareeha. We just don't need to know." She laughed in annoyance and ran her hands through her hair whilst slumping down into a seat in the otherwise empty briefing room.
"She's going to leave me again, I know it."
"She fights for you Fareeha." You sat down beside her and wrapped your arm around her bare shoulder. "Every time she steps off that carrier she fights so hard because she wants to protect you."
She reached deeply into her pocket and pulled out a dinged-up locket, she slowly unfurled the clasp to reveal a picture of a young Ana and young Fareeha.
"She gave me this."
"Okay... so she wants you to keep it safe?"
"No." She rubbed the picture of her mother gently with her thumb. "She always carries it with her, when I woke up it was on my bedside table."
