Godzilla vs. Mothra (1992) Discussion

Hello everyone and welcome back in to another entry in my Godzilla discussion page. For today's discussion we're going to be talking about The Godzilla vs. Mothra movie from 1992. Also known as Godzilla and Mothra: The Battle For Earth.

[The Mothra Theme Is So Damn Catchy].

In this movie we see the return of Mothra. One of Godzilla's most famous adversaries who hasn't been seen since Destroy all Monsters. We also see the return of the Twin fairies (also known as the Cosmos) and we are also introduced to a whole new Kaiju known as Battra.

[Cool design but the roar sounds just like Rodan].

Now, like Mothra. Battra evolves in a similar scenario. (From Larvae to Winged creature). In the movie it's explained that both Mothra and Battra are ancient enemies. Battra was originally created by the Earth to stop humanity from destroying it years ago. But, it got carried away and so Mothra showed up to stop and defeat it.

I actually really like the design of Battra in its Larva form. He looks very menacing. Way more intimidating than Mothra in her larva form and when he evolves he looks pretty cool too.

Anyways, as far as the rest of the movie goes we got an Evil business tycoon who only wants his money. But, he's very forgettable so I don't know why I even bothered mentioning him. We also got Godzilla who shows up and gets into battles with both Mothra and Battra.

The fights are good, although not as impressive as in the previous entry in the series. But, then again that was a tough act to follow. Both Mothra and Battra can now fire lasers (which is always cool) and the two of them team up against Godzilla in the final act.

At the end of the movie the two monsters carry Godzilla off to the sea. However, Godzilla takes a bite out of Battra (which kills him) and the two go crashing into the sea. Well it turns out that this couldn't come at a worse time because originally there was a meteor that was supposed to be headed towards earth and Battra was going to crash in to it and stop it. However, since Battra died. Mothra took its place and went after the meteor. It kind of sucks that Mothra just goes up to space and doesn't appear alongside Godzilla again until GMK. (Not counting stock footage from Godzilla vs Space Godzilla).

Aftermath:
After this movie Godzilla would continue to appear in a few more of his movies (3 in the 2nd series) while Mothra would go on to star in her own solo trilogy known as the Rebirth of Mothra Trilogy. Perhaps once I get through these Godzilla movies I can start talking about other Toho movies.

Overall, this is a pretty good Godzilla film. I'd rank it either 3rd or 4th in the second series. Behind Godzilla vs King Ghidorah and Godzilla vs Destoroyah.
