Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla Discussion

Hey everybody and welcome back to the next chapter in my long running Godzilla Discussion page! This time we're going to be taking a look at Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla!

Ok so this is the 3rd variation of Mechagodzilla to take on Godzilla. Or wait they don't really call him Mechagodzilla they stick to calling him Kiryu for most of the movie. I don't know why that it since Mechagodzilla sounds way cooler and it's also the name on the movie but oh well.

As far as characters go in this movie the main lead named Akane does a pretty decent job. Her backstory shows that she was a maser-canon technicians who battled against Godzilla and failed. So throughout the movie she's seeking some sort of redemption for what happened and by the end of it she ends up piloting Mechagodzilla.

Plot: This movie is once again another reboot ignoring the last couple of Godzilla movies in the millennium series although it does share continuity with some other Toho films such as Mothra and my personal non favorite Godzilla Toho Kaiju Movie War of the Gargantuas. They did a pick and choose with this one in terms of which movies are considered in continuity and such.

With this one scientists and that decide to build a Mechagodzilla or Kiryu as it's known around the bones of the original Godzilla.(something that will come to bite them back in the ass later on). Anyways, so they build Mechagodzilla and the design here is actually pretty good. It's a nice balance between the Shōwa and Heisei series designs.

However, all is not well in here because when it goes to battle Godzilla he roars which causes Mechagodzilla (Kiryu) to remember it was Godzilla and it ends up causing a bunch of destruction. After that scene the majority of the rest of the movie involves the military trying to fix Kiryu so that it can get Godzilla. They plan on using this weapon known as the absolute zero weapon to freeze and kill him.

Eventually the military manages to get Kiryu back online and it does battle with Godzilla. In the end the battle between Godzilla and Kiryu ends in a standstill with both of them severely damaged and Godzilla walks away and that's basically where the movie ends.

Overall, I like this movie better than Godzilla 2000 and Godzilla vs Megaguirus in the millennium series but it's not up to GMK levels. With this movie it is in essence a part 1 type of movie as the movie that comes out after this one is in essence the 2nd part of this story. So it doesn't really feel like a complete movie. There's some good action in this movie and the music is once again great but it doesn't leave me as satisfied as I would have hoped. As far as Godzilla goes in this movie he's cool and all but I'm still not the biggest fan of this design. It's a little better than the Godzilla 2000 and Godzilla vs Megaguirus designs but not as good as the GMK suit. However, I think if you're a Godzilla fan then this is one that you can just sit back and watch and provably find some entertainment with it.

Anyways, that's all I have to say about this one. At the time I'm posting this Godzilla Planet of the Monsters is set to drop on Netflix this week so there's that to look forward to.
