THE CUSTOMERS INSIDE THE café were talking over each other, almost making it impossible for me to concentrate on the document that I was reading on my tablet.
"You seem busy," someone asks amidst the growing noise that's accompanied by the sound of rain that's coming from outside. I take my eyes off the screen to look back at the owner of the voice, Todd Cooper, who was sitting across from me wearing his favorite jersey jacket. He was bored, I could tell, and I could also tell that he was starting to get impatient.
"I'll just go over this one last time and then we can go," I assure him, looking back at the document again. I already worked on this document all night, but I was asked to thoroughly edit it before handing it over to my boss, that's why I have to make sure it's perfect. After all, I just got promoted so I didn't want to mess up.
I wanted to finish this as soon as possible because I didn't want Todd to wait any longer, but then I heard him sigh and mumble something underneath his breath, which I wasn't able to understand. When I still didn't bother to entertain him, Todd takes out his phone instead. At least now he has something better to do while he waits.
While double-checking the document, Todd starts tapping his fingernails on the table. I tried to ignore him, but the tapping sound became louder and louder, making me look back at him in irritation.
"Do you mind?" I ask.
Todd ignores me as his eyes were still glued to the screen of his phone. He was making it pretty obvious that he was growing impatient, so I take a deep breath and finally put my tablet away.
"I'm sorry. Work has been piling up and I—"
"Should I just go? Since you're so busy and all," he quickly says, hiding his phone and suddenly standing from his seat. He then checks his watch, almost like he was now in a hurry to leave.
I take another deep breath to calm myself as I grab his arm. "Todd, please..." I call out, trying to make him sit back down again, but Todd pulls his arm away from me and looks back at me with an annoyed expression on his face. "What now?" he asks, and the way he just pushed my hand away made me feel pathetic somehow. In the past, he'd never done something like this despite how angry he was.
"You know, I've already noticed this before but..." I pause and stare at the cup of coffee and the slice of cheesecake on top of the table that Todd barely even touched before asking, "Have I done something wrong? If I have then can you please tell me so I'd know?"
The question must have confused Todd a little because he didn't react to it when he first heard it. When I thought that he was going to ignore what I said, Todd suddenly sighs and massages his temple, visibly showing me how much he just wanted to leave. "You're making a big deal out of this again. You're busy, aren't you? So what else am I going to do?" He asks, looking even more annoyed.
