Sixty One

I sat in the waiting room, finally collected. Everyone was there, from Tobi to Josh to Harry to Cal, who looked absolutely pale and was gripping his prosthetic tightly. Even Ethan and Em were there, severely distraught that this happened on what was supposed to be the happiest day of their lives. 

I watched them from across the room. Ethan was rubbing her hand to calm her down. I saw she was crying, and that made me feel ten times more guilty. Tobi sat next to me, close. Maybe too close, knowing what had happened previously. I scooted away discreetly, but I think he still noticed. He opened his mouth to speak, but not wanting to have a conversation with him, I stood up and walked over to Em and Ethan, who were sitting in their own corner.

"Hey." I croaked. Ethan looked down, a sad and disappointed expression on his face, but Em looked up at me, eyes wet. She still looked determined and brave. "I just wanted to say-"

"It wasn't your fault." She stated.

"What? How did you know-"

"How do you think? You always try to take the blame for everything and you can't do that anymore. It's tearing you apart."

I sighed, and Em patted the seat next to her. I reluctantly sat down, Ethan's eyes rising to look at my face. Surprisingly, I saw in his eyes that he didn't blame me either. I tensed a little less, but only a little.

Em started to continue. "You couldn't have planned this. This is just how things are supposed to be I guess. We can only wait and see."

"But your wedding," I whimpered.

"Drinking wine and eating cake is less important than a friend in need." Ethan said.

More stress was relieved from my chest. "Thank you."

They both nodded and Em took my hand, "we care about you, all right?"

I smiled and stood up. A small weight was still weighing on me. Olajide.

All we can do is wait and see.
