Sixty

I snapped out of the illusion and I delved back into reality. I was sitting on the ground in the middle of the road, a foot away from JJ. The man in the truck had already disappeared. A hit and run. 

I started to scream. I screamed and screamed, and I couldn't think of a better option. Couldn't I have called the police? Couldn't I have ran to get somebody? Or pulled him out of the road?

Maybe I could have, and it probably would have given him more time if I did. 

I don't know when it happened, but Tobi came rushing out amidst my sobs.

"Oh my God Olajide." Tobi looked shocked, "Simon what the hell happened?"

"It's all my fault it's always my fault I can never do anything right." I spat, water pouring all over my face. I felt that I was falling down that hole again, the one I never feel like I can crawl back up.

"We need to get him out of the street." Tobi started to drag JJ, while I just sat there like a rock. Tobi got him out of the road and called 999, then ran back for me.

Soon enough, the ambulance had come, and the whole wedding party had come out to see what all of the commotion was. 

Everyone was crowding around the ambulance. JJ get carted away on a stretcher, an air machine was his tether to this world. I couldn't breathe. 

I was sitting up against a curb. Tobi came over to me with an extremely grim look on his face. He never cried. He always kept composure, something I could never achieve.

Tobi wiped the tears and snot away from my face with a tissue.

"It's my fault, isn't it?" I asked him.

"No. None of us could have imagined this would happen Simon."

"But it happened before! It happened with Cal and now it happened with JJ." I shout, and then in a whisper I said, "I'm a curse, Tobi."

"No. No no no no no." He reached down and hugged me. "You're so far from that Si. You bring light into everybody's life."

I sat there in silence, the ambulance wailing into the distance.

"Come on, Simon," Tobi pulled me up, "I'll drive you to the hospital."
