The year 1776 and I'm sitting on a barrel on a trade ship that will take me to the New World. Away from France where all the haunting memory's lay. The waves are rising and falling as I remember my father. I was six when he cheated on my mother with a mistress from one of his favorite taverns. As I think of him my mother's face appears. I remember the day when we were walking in the park, I looked over at her. Her figure was hunched over and breathing heavily. Her agony frightens me into asking "Mére are you okay." (mother) She stood back up slowly but smiling, she calmly tells me "I'm just fine mon amour." (my love) I let it go until the next day she collapsed. She was in bed with seizures daily. She refused to eat or drink. I took care of her the best I could but she died three months after that day in the park. That was three years ago. Now I'm 19 and I think of her daily. I started my first year of Medical school in France when I heard talk of an uprising war in the thirteen colonies and that nurses will be needed. It was the perfect chance to leave France.
"Bonjour Mademoiselle," (Hello miss) A man says as he bows to me. Interrupting my thoughts I turn to him and smile.
"Bonjour," (Hello) I reply handing him my hand for him to kiss. He slowly drops my hand after the action. Standing tall he now looks overpowering. I smile at him weakly.
"Parlez vous Anglais?"(Do you speak English) I ask him.
"And why would I not speak English? I am an American, after all. Well, soon to be anyway," He states. "How about you? Where did a lovely lady as yourself learn such a language?"
"My mother," I told him shyly.
"Splendid," He responds.
"I'm so sorry I never got your name?"
"Marquis de Lafayette, but you can just call me Lafayette," He announces loudly for the whole ship to hear.
"Alaska Allaire," I tell him.
"Ah a beautiful name for a beautiful woman," He tells me.
"What's in the New World for you?" I ask him as I turn towards the waves. He smiles wide and laughs.
"The Revolution of course," He yells as he spreads his arms open to the calm sea. I laugh at him. He turns towards me for my answer.
"I was a medical student for toooooo long, time for the real action and where better then the revolution," I tell him.
"Of course! Let's hope you don't see me in the clinic often then," He whispers. I laugh "let's hope," We sit in silence for awhile until a woman comes over for Lafayette. I smile and excuse myself back to my chambers.
