I don't know how but as we make our way to the clinic we run into Alexander walking towards us. He looked like he had run a few miles.
"Where is John, I came as soon as I heard," He says through many breaths. His hair is still down from earlier in my tent. I smile as his hair sways when he rambles. I snap out of the trance reminding myself about John.
"I need to get to the clinic," I say as I start to run again. My shoes start to slow me down in the snow so I take off my flats and kept running. My feet are burning in the snow with my shoes off but I'm running three times faster than before and getting to John is all I care about.
I get to the clinic with some of the nurses waiting for me outside. One of them was attempting to get John onto his side. I stepped in by grabbing John from her. She steps away politely and watches from afar with everyone else. I hold John up on his side while I hold his stitches.
Not long after he stops to shake. I carefully place him back down to examine his wound.
"Alaska," he whispers. I look up at him his face is pale and weak. He continues "My head." My eyebrows furrow in confusion until I see a gash hidden under his messy hair.
"Catherine get me a needle, thread, and water," I command. To the nurse next to me. She comes back with all my supplies.
I rip a piece of my grey skirt piece and carefully wets it into the water. I dab the cloth against John's head wound. I can hear him grinding his teeth through the pain. I grab the needle to clean it. Then I carefully I start the stitching. John's face was agonized the whole time. Most of the nurses had lost interest and left leaving John and I alone in the clinic.
"How did I miss this?" I ask in disbelief as I snitch.
"I fell...asleep...before I co...uld tell...you," He says through closed teeth.
"Don't think about it. It will be over soon," I tell him calmly.
"It's a little...har...d not to think...about,"
"Other than getting shot and this head gash how was the battle?" I asked changing the subject.
"The battle of White Marsh?" He asks.
"Yeah, how was it?" I ask as I'm getting to the end of his stitches.
"Inconclusive," He says as I tie the thread and cut the needle off finishing his wound.
"Well, I'm done," I tell him with a smile.
"Thank God that was painful," He laughs as he pretends to pray. I laugh at his foolishness.
"You did better than most men," I tell him.
"Yeah...that's the kind of guy I am," He jokes as he flexes his muscles.
"Okay, careful big guy don't go and break those stitches," I warn him. He stops and smiles.
"I'll go get Alexander and Lafayette," I tell him as I start to head out of the clinic.
I walk out of the clinic and I'm greeted by Lafayette and Alexander who were anxiously waiting.
"He's all good. Someone should stay with him through the night just in case though," I tell the two worried men. Lafayette smiles and I continue "I'm going to take a walk around the lake if anything happens come and get me," I tell them. Lafayette nods in agreement and rushes into the clinic and over to John's cot. I start to walk away when I hear Alexander behind me.
"So, how about tonight I take you on a real date?" he asks as he extends his hand out in front of me to take.
"Where? We can't necessarily leave camp?" I remind him. He walks closer to me so our body's meet "Let it be a surprise." I smile up at him.
"I see you took my advice about your hair," I state as I run my fingers through it. His face becomes cheerless as he blushes at my touch. I start to walk away but he doesn't let go of my hand. I turn back to him.
"Meet me here in three hours?" he asks.
"See you then," I say. I walk off into the nearby woods and all the way down to a frozen lake. I carefully sit on the edge of a hill that leads down into the frozen lake. As I sit there I just keep replaying today in my head. Just even thinking about Alexander plants a smile on my face.
After, my mom died I felt empty. Moving to New York filled some of that space. Then, meeting Lafayette and John filled it more but not until today when Alexander kissed me was I full. I have butterflies just saying his name. My thoughts start to trail off as I watched a baby deer and the mother deer dance on the ice.
The animals play until I hear a gunshot. The bullet strikes the mother deer and she falls leaving the baby an orphan. I look up and over the hill where a man in a red coat stands holding a pistol. He starts to descend down the hill I was on to get to the mother deer. I shoot up quietly but fast, trying not to be seen by him. Although, two more red coats appear in front of me.
"Look at this," The man on the right says his accent full and thick not like Alexander's who's is gentle and barely existent.
The man with the gun turns over towards my direction. He smiles when he sees me and starts to walk over.
I scream loudly discombobulating them giving me a head start. I run up the hill quickly, screaming for help. I can hear them following me but I never look back.
My dress is starting to get heavy and is slowing me down as I run towards camp. I can see Alexander, straight ahead of me, walking with General George Washington.
"Alexander," I scream. He turns around to my voice smiling until he sees the men behind me. His shining smile turns into a somber look as he drops his papers, he was holding and starts to sprint over to me. I feel a hard pair of hands grips my waist. As another redcoat gets ahold of my arms pulling me backward. The third stops next to me cocks his gun and places it against my head. Tears drip down my face as I struggle in their grasps. Alexander stops running when he's about 5 feet away. I choke on my tears making a disturbing noise erupt from me.
"Quiet," He commands into my ear. I kick my feet violently trashing my body against a tree when I feel a piercing pain penetrate my shin. The gunshot echoes throughout camp causing a crowd of men to form a crescent formation in front of me. There all staring at me, in the distance I can hear Lafayette screaming something but my leg is burning and my vision is slowing.
"Let her go," Alexander commands in a deep voice that sends shivers down my spine. The man holding my waist laughs into my ear making me cringe. His beard scratches my face making me even more uncomfortable. I'm so weak he only needs to hold me with one hand. He pulls out a knife from his buckle and taps the blade against to my check. He presses the blade into my check cutting through my skin. My skin burns as he cuts deeper and deeper. I pull my head away from it so now all I can see is his devious smile. He kisses me as the blade cuts through. My blood is dripping down onto my dress.
"Aidez moi," (help me) I cry as his lips are smashed against mine. The man with the beard moves his lips away from mine and turns to his friend with the gun.
"A French girl," He tells him.
"Ah, the commander will love her," The man with the pistol laughs. He grips my face digging his dirty thumb into my cut. The room spins as he presses deeper into my wound.
"What do you want from us?" Alexander cried. The man with the beard tightens his grip taking the air of me. While he thinks.
"We have everything we need, but...I'm tired of fighting," The man with the pistol response.
"Yeah, when you surrender you can have the whore," the man with the beard mused. As he moves his hand with the knife in it over my body. I'm so weak I don't even fight which makes him laugh loudly. Alexander stands five-feet in front of me thinking.
"Alexander your not really thinking about this," I plea weakly. He continues to think ignoring me.
"Alexander," I weep. He looks up at me and I shake my head as I mumbled: "Don't."
"Quiet!" The man with the beard threatens. He stabs his knife into my dress cutting into my injured leg. I cry out as I crumple onto the red snow. The men watch me from the floor where I lay in pain. Utterly, helpless I hear Alexander curse them out.
"There has to something else?" Alexander spits.
"That's our final offer," The man with the pistol responds. I hear footsteps when I feel someone pick me up. As their arms touch me I pull out the knife from my leg. I stab the man aimless hitting him in the chest then pulling it out quickly. He falls to the ground the other two men are stunned and just watch me. I stand up not wasting time and I throw the knife at the man with the gun. It strikes him in between the eyes. He crumbles fast into the snow. The last man had fled into the woods and I'm standing...well not for long anyway. I can't feel my right leg as all feeling had been taken. I start to fall when I feel someone catch my limp body. My eyes were closed so I slowly open them seeing a shadow of a man, I can only assume is Alexander. He is holding me close when my vision blurs more and I finally lose consciousness. The last thing I saw was Alexander picking me up and running.
