I had a broken rib and my injured foot was swollen so I couldn't walk. The past week had been miserable. I couldn't move without serve pain in my chest or foot. So, I spent the past four days in Alexander's bed. He stayed with me the first couple of days until around day three when he started to spend the days in his study. If I ever needed him he would come but I spent more of the days alone.
How did I keep getting hurt? As soon as I was starting to get better this happens! At this rate, I will never go back to war. I long for Lafayette and John, my best friends were risking their lives for our country and I wasn't there to help. I write to them often but their replies are getting shorter and taking longer. They are no longer at Valley Forge but in New Jersey for the Battle of Monmouth.
I have received a letter signed from Lafayette and Alexander got a letter from John Laurens. My letter from Lafayette read...
Tres cher, Alaska,
Twill be an honor, Miss Eden to be back in yours and Mr. Hamilton's company. How do you do? You would never believe that General Washington has promoted Charles Lee into making him, second-in-command. To amuse, he shits the bed at the Battle of Monmouth. He protested "Retreat" against General Washington orders to "Attack." To make the best of a bad bargain I stepped in. We lost a thousand soldiers in a hundred degree heat but we snatch a stalemate from the jaws of defeat. To astonish this quite a win for us. We all miss you, Madam and Mr. Hamilton. You need to heal so you both can come back and fight. We need Alexander and he won't come back until you have healed. So in summary, heal right and properly so we can celebrate your return. -Your most obedient servant Lafayette
Wait...did Lafayette just say Alexander is here because of me? I write back...
Dear kind Sir,
I am heartily glad to hear from you Sir Lafayette, It was quite awhile since I've heard from you I have started to worry. I am to be true blue on your new position from Washington. You will be honored throughout history. To expect, Lee to be so childish and young is quite heartbreaking as I do wish him the best. To want, I hope you rise beyond your station. You have me quite confused as Alexander has told me he was sent home and did not go willingly? I hope he was not foolish enough to follow me home. I am healing and hopefully, soon I will be able to join you all at war. Hopefully, before you leave New Jersey.
-To see you soon Alaska
I seal the letter setting it on Alexander's desk for him to mail it to camp. I crawl back into Alexander's bed.
Alexander is not foolish he would never throw away war for me. I am only his friend that has shared one kiss and a date but that is all. He even lets me sleep in his bed while he is on the couch. Expect, for a few nights when I beg him to sleep in the bed so his back can heal from restless nights on the couch.
"Alexander," I yell. He doesn't respond. I try to get out of the bed using my good foot making my way to the door of his room.
"Alexander," I yell again and again he does not answer. I make my way down a step then two steps. Soon I'm halfway down the stairs. I have been hopping on my good foot but now I have pain in both feet. I stop and sit on the middle step yelling again, "Alexander." With no response. I sigh and I continue down the rest of the stairs slowly and carefully. Taking Lafayette's advice to heal.
I'm at the end of the stairs when I can feel my good foot begin to buckle. I quickly sit down keeping my bad foot out of my way.
"Alexander!" I yell. I hear a small noise like wood rubbing?
"Alexander?" I yell again in confusion. The wood rubbing happens again and I hear footsteps. I look at Alexander's empty and dark study hoping he will be coming out. The wood rubbing happens again and the footsteps ceased. I look over to the front door with the doorknob turning. The door opens and Alexander is there. I sigh in relief when I hear the wood rubbing again. I look over to where it's coming from when I see a man in the corner of the room. He walks over and I recognize him instantly. Happiness fills me as I sigh "Hercules." He laughs and responds "Sorry I heard you calling Alexander's name and I could have sworn you were sinning. So I let myself in and I was sitting in the kitchen," I blush as he jokes.
"Yeah, and I heard banging and a door close so I wasn't gonna ruin a good time,"
"Okay, Hercules you can stop. I was just sending a letter to John," Alexander laughs as he sits on the nearby couch.
"Sorry for the confusion, I was trying to get Alexander's attention so I can confront him with some unbelievable news I have received," I say as I turn towards Alexander. He face was pure confusion. I see his wheels working as he tries to remember what I could be talking about.
"What did I do this time?" He asks.
"Did you leave camp because of me?" I ask him. Alexander's face turns shameful and I know my answer.
"You are idiotic! Why would you do that!" I ask.
"Oh shit," I hear Hercules respond as he sips some coffee he had made earlier.
"I had to make sure you were okay," He confesses.
"Washington must be so disappointed! You have a future Alexander don't throw it away because I've got a hurt leg," I tell him.
"It's not just your leg," He says in defeat.
"What do you mean?" I ask.
"Alaska, I let you go to the lake and you were almost taken from me and then I have you at my house and Noel comes for you," He says with anger. I fall silent.
"I know you can deal by yourself but every time I leave you alone something happens,"
"You can't control what is going to happen," I respond.
"I can try!" He yells.
"No, you can't! If I die that is not your fault!"
"I can help prevent it though!"
"How? By following me, everyone?" I ask.
"By not leaving you alone, I can be there," He says sitting next to me on the last step.
"I'm going to be just fine, I'm not going anywhere," I say quietly for him to hear and not Hercules who was watching while intensely sipping his coffee.
"How do I know that?" He asks.
"I, Alaska Eden solemnly swear to not leave you," I whisper to him. I see him smile.
"Thank you," He quietly tells me.
"Hey, you're going to war I need clarification too," I tell him.
"I Alexander Hamilton solemnly swear I will not die as long as you are in my life," I smile at his words. I hadn't noticed how close we were until now but are noses we almost touching. We both lean closer when "Hey, why did it get so quiet?" Hercules asks from the other room. Alexander and I pull away quickly. Alexander stands up and hands me his hand so he can help me up. We join Hercules in the other room.
