They say ignorance it peace. That the not knowing of something is exactly why you're still able to smile.
I could sure do without the knowledge that weighed down on my shoulders.
But then again, could I really live with myself. Never knowing why anyone was acting so strange.
Could I ever live with the fact I might never see Jack again?
No, I couldn't. I wouldn't.
That's why I was walking up to his door. Again. Just like the day before. I knocked and waited. But unlike the day prior, Jack did answer the door. The boy held his now freshly bandaged head.
" Ugh" he groaned as the bright light from outside hit his ocean eyes.
His eyes trailed up and soon found mine. The blue orbs filled with pain and something I couldn't put my finger on.
I did notice his free hand clench into a fist at his side. Tense.
" Are you okay?" I asked, walking inside.
Jack almost slammed the door behind me.
" Uh, Yeah. Head feels worse then a hangover" He whispered.
" Did you take medication?" I turned to him. I hesitated.
" That's What you humans do...right? When something hurts?" I asked.
I haven't been human for longer then there's been sliced bread. I had no idea how to act or be human like anymore. Rather then take care of them.
Jack chuckled with a small smile at my words. He made his way to the kitchen.
" Yes Mark, that's what we do".
I followed him into the kitchen and saw that we had started making pancakes. He walked over to the stove and flipped one.
" Is that not what you do?" Jack asked, glancing back at me.
I chuckled myself as I sat on one of the seats to the island of the kitchen.
" No we don't-If we get hurt we heal immediately" I explained.
I saw Jack stopped and turned off the stove. He hung his head low. He seemed to stop and stare into space. Contemplating something. Or remembering a memory.
" Yet you didn't exactly heal that day immediately did you?" He asked, his voice flat.
I slipped out of my seat and slowly made my way over to him.
" Uh, no. When we get seriously hurt our body shuts down and it takes longer to heal....".
" Why wasn't I told this?!" He snapped.
Sean turned to me, anger and frustration in his body language. His ocean eyes locked with mine and all I saw was hurt and confusion. Both fists now balled at his sides.
" Dan and Felix are too young to know about that-" I started.
Jack slammed the spatula he was using down in the bench.
" God damn it Mark! I thought you were dead!".
Both of us froze and looked into each other's eyes. It was if time had stopped and suspended us in mid air. The atmosphere around me felt thick. I gazed into the ocean orbs that stared back at me with pleading pain. His eyes, pain and confusion. Mine soft and forgiving.
" I'm sorr-".
" Do you have any idea what happened that day?" Jack asked quickly.
I opened my mouth to speak but I couldn't find the words. All I remembered was being in a Jeep. Then blackness.
I have no idea what happened to Jack or anyone else.
Jacks bottom lip started to quiver. His hands shaking.
" You died! I watched the light fall from your eyes!" He cried, tears falling.
Oh how I was sick of seeing tears right now.
