EXTENDED SUMMARY John Bender raised a big, metaphorical middle finger to the town of Derry, Maine and its hot summers and shitty curfews. He raised a big metaphorical middle finger to his parents who would rather hit up the liquor store than buy groceries, and who called him by "John" instead of "Bender" even after countless times of him chastising them. The boy was sick of the rural town and the muscly Bowers Gang who picked on him everyday. He loathed watching the same reruns on daytime tv and coming home to dim lamps and cold floorboards. Bender longed for adventure and an escape from his empty living room in the hours of the beating sun. And after seeing a group of losers riding by on bikes with a kid who looks like he just came from hell in back, it seemed like an adventure worthy of its own movie.
