I sat with my head in my hands. It had been almost 5 hours of surgery. I had barely moved, I refused to eat. I refused to do anything but sit and wait nervously. My hands nervously played with the hem of my sleeve. Zeke gently rubbed circles on my back. "He'll be fine. He's strong. I promise Ri," he mumbled.
Marlene, Shauna, Lynn, Christina, Eddie, Jack, Will and my brothers all waited with me. I chewed my lip nervously. I needed him to be okay. He was my everything. He loved me. He made me feel important. He made me feel loved. I don't think that I could live without him. I felt tears sting my eyes and I heard the clicking of shoes on the floor. I glanced up anxiously to find a doctor in dark blue scrubs and a white coat. He was about 30 years old. His hair had a nice flow to it. "Family of Tobias Eaton?" He asked.
Everyone looked around awkwardly at the realization of his real name. "Uh- y-yes," I said standing. I crossed my arms nervously and looked him into his deep brown eyes.
"I'm Doctor Webster. I helped perform his surgery. He lost a lot of blood but he pulled through. We repaired the damage to his liver. His leg was broken during the accident and he has many various scrapes and bruises. He should be fine. We moved him to a family recovery room. He should be awake from the surgery soon. I can have a nurse show you the way," he offered politely.
I released a breath I hadn't realized I was holding in. Weight was immediately lifted off my shoulders. We followed a nurse up to the Recovery rooms and to Tobias' room. He was hooked up to various machines. He looked so vulnerable. It broke my heart to see him that way. I bit back my sob and slowly walked to his beside. I sat in the chair and grabbed his fragile hand in mine. An IV stuck out from his soft skin. I chewed my lip to keep the tears back. Zeke pulled up a chair beside me and gently rubbed my back. The room was rather large. Everyone sat around in silence. We waited for what felt like hours before I felt a squeeze on my hand. I glanced up to his face to find his eyes fluttering open. The bandage on his head was a pristine white color. His dark stormy eyes found mine and I felt a tear slip down my cheek. "Hey baby," I said gently.
He blinked a couple of times before opening his mouth. His voice came out harsh and rough. "Tris," he breathed out gently.
I smiled at him, sniffling back my sob. "I'm so sorry," I mumbled.
Everyone watched awkwardly. His hand squeezed my hand, "no, don't say that."
He turned his head slowly, his eyes blinking slowly to adjust to the light. "Four, my man," Eddie said smiling.
"Toughest guy we know," jack said with an encouraging smile.
Four attempted a smile. He coughed violently. I felt pain strike my chest. My phone buzzed in my pocket. I gently pulled it from my Pocket. An unknown number appeared. A text. Reading, 'it's your fault'. A lump formed in my throat. I felt like I couldn't breath. Who the hell would text me this? Who even knows about this? I looked up to keep the tears from falling down my cheeks. I hadn't told anyone about this, and my guess is no one else had either. I took a deep breath in and pushed my chair back. I couldn't cry right now, I couldn't burden Four with that. Or anyone else for that matter. I left the room as quickly as possible and found the nearest bathroom. I immediately shut the door and locked it, resting my back on it. My phone buzzed again, this time from a call. I stared at the caller ID for a moment. My nerves shot up, horror filling my chest. I hesitatingly clicked the deny button. I quickly texted the number. 'Who is this?'
'I know who you really are'
'What?'
'I'm someone you'll wish you never messed with'
A knock at the door made me jump. I nervously stood. My heart was pounding at an alarming rate. I sucked in a breath. I waited for a moment in silence. "Uh-tris, it's Uriah," he said awkwardly.
I released a breath I hadn't even realized I was holding in. "One second!" I replied, rubbing my eyes with cold water and drying my face.
"Alright," he replied.
I finished up and opened the door to his worried eyes. "Are you Alright?" He asked me.
"Yeah- I just got a call from Uh- Mom," I said, playing it off easily.
"Oh- okay," he said rather suspiciously.
I tucked my phone into my pocket and walked back to the room with him. No one needed to know about my mystery text. I'm sure it was just someone from school, attempting to get under my skin. I followed Uriah back into the. Everyone had left except for Zeke. He was talking to Tobias is a low voice about something. His head shot up as I entered and Tobias slowly turned his head towards me. "You okay?" he mumbled, his husky voice full of exhaustion.
"Yeah, my mom just called," I lied easily.
I returned to my seat beside him. Later in the night, Zeke and Uriah left, leaving Four and I alone. I woke up with a start in my chair. I snapped my eyes to Tobias, who was watching me with love in his eyes. "Sorry," I muttered awkwardly.
"It's fine, you looked cute," he said attempting a smile.
We sat in silence. He shifted over in his bed painfully. He motioned me to lay beside him and I moved carefully into the sheets, careful not to bump or hurt him in any way. He weakly linked his arm around me and kissed my cheek. "I'm so sorry," I cried into his chest.
"For what?" he asked in surprise.
"It's all my fault. I let you leave. I let you get hurt. If I would've believed you then you wouldn't be hurt," I said, tears flooding my eyes.
"Baby, this isn't your fault. I promise. Don't ever tell me its your fault. You couldn't have done anything. This was anyone but your own fault. I love you," he said, getting exhausted from his speech.
I nuzzled my face into him and he laid a gentle kiss on my forehead. "I love you to," I mumbled back.
