August 17, 1973
The sun is shining heavily in the late summer afternoon. The streets are moderately crowded with Hogwarts students and their families shopping for school supplies. REMUS, exiting the Apothecary, checks his bags with his parents while JAMES descends the steps of Gringotts with FLEAMONT and EUPHEMIA.
JAMES: (calling loudly) Remus!
REMUS turns around and sees JAMES sprinting towards him. He smiles and the boys embrace each other like brothers.
JAMES: How've you been, mate?
REMUS: (smiling) You know how it is. The months keep getting shorter.
JAMES: And I thought your furry little problem was improving.
FLEAMONT and EUPHEMIA approach the boys.
FLEAMONT: Afternoon, Lyall.
LYALL: Good to see you Fleamont. (The two shake hands). How are you, Euphemia?
EUPHEMIA: (laughing) Carrying on. They're growing up too fast. (She gestures to JAMES and REMUS, who are re-enacting a battle with imaginary wands).
FLEAMONT: A shame that Hope can't be here.
LYALL: She understands the laws that forbid Muggles from entering certain places. She'll be able to come to King's Cross to see him off, though.
FLEAMONT: That's good.
Across the mall, the Black family makes their way across the street. SIRIUS, upon seeing his friends, runs over to them.
SIRIUS: What's up, losers?
JAMES: (giving SIRIUS a hug that nearly tackles him) Worse now that you're here.
SIRIUS: Love you, too. How's it going, Remus?
REMUS: Not bad. I'm really excited to get back to school, though.
SIRIUS: I can't wait. That map's gonna be our best friend.
JAMES: No doubt. I'm also looking forward to getting a bit closer to you-know-who. (He nudges REMUS, who shakes his head).
REMUS: If you give Lily any rubbish this year, she will rip your head off. You know that, right?
JAMES: Naw, she'll love me. Anyway, maybe we should go someplace private to discuss- you know.
SIRIUS: What?
JAMES: (grinning) Our "furry little problem".
REMUS: No, we really shouldn't-
JAMES: Mate, we're gonna find out a way to help you this year, all right? I promise. (He turns to his parents) Hey, Mum! Is it okay if we take a walk for a few minutes?
EUPHEMIA: (checking her watch) Just a few minutes, honey. We must be gone soon!
JAMES: No problem! Let's go.
JAMES, SIRIUS, and REMUS sprint down Diagon Alley, laughing and shoving each other.
