The Marauders Rise (II)

James' Inquiry

December 1, 1973

In the library, REMUS is studying alone at a table by the window. The sun is just beginning to set as the dying light fades through the glass. The door to the library opens, and JAMES barges in.

PINCE: What are you doing, making all that noise, boy?

JAMES: Just looking for my friend, Madame Pince.

PINCE: Defile any books and you go straight to the Headmaster's Office, boy!

JAMES walks down the aisles until he spots REMUS at the table in the back.

JAMES: (walking over) Hey, mate.

REMUS: Hey. What's up?

JAMES: Getting through the day. I see you've been hanging out with Evans a lot.

REMUS: Oh, well, you know, we're just- really good friends-

JAMES: I know. That's why I need your help.

REMUS: My help? With what?

JAMES: Evans. You need to get her on my side.

REMUS: (laughing) On your side? I'm afraid that ship has long since sailed, James.

JAMES: Not completely, Remus, my old chap. You need to talk me up to her. Get her to like me.

REMUS: I just really don't think that's- possible, at this point.

JAMES: She's blinded from my terrific personality, Remus.

REMUS: I think she sees you more of conceited and overly-confident. And also unnecessarily mean to that Snape kid.

JAMES: Oh, Snivelly can relax. Anyway, it's up to you to change her mind.

REMUS: I really don't think-

JAMES: You can do anything you set your mind to, Remus. And there's a Sickle in it for you for every time you mention my abs.

REMUS: (sighing) Oh, Merlin, Lily is gonna hate me.

JAMES: Good idea! Get her to hate you, and love me.

REMUS: Now that's really not gonna happen-

JAMES: Whatever you have to do, Remus. But help a friend out, will you? I'm counting on you.

JAMES leaves the library, and REMUS continues to stare out the window, where the sun has already set and the sky continues to grow darker.
