December 15, 1973

In the Gryffindor common room, it is nearing midnight. REMUS is sitting in the niche in the wall by the window, staring out into the night sky. Only a couple other students are in the common room, quietly studying, with the only sound being the roaring fire by the hearth. LILY descends from the girls' staircase and walks over to REMUS.

LILY: (sitting down in the niche and sitting cross-legged across from REMUS) Hey.

REMUS: What are you doing up so late?

LILY: I don't know. Couldn't sleep. So I figured I'd come down and see if anyone was still up, and here I found you.

REMUS: Well. We've got a lot to discuss.

LILY: (smiling and resting her hands on REMUS' knees) Oh, yeah? What about?

REMUS: Everyone's favorite Gryffindor Chaser.

LILY: Potter? Why in Merlin would we need to talk about him?

REMUS: Well, you know he has a crush on you, right?

LILY: Yeah. I think everyone in this bloody castle is aware that James Potter has a crush on me. Including the teachers-

REMUS: Well, it's gotten to the point where he asked me to talk to you about it-

LILY: (laughing) I've made your life quite difficult, haven't I?

REMUS: (Smiling) Yes, you have.

LILY: (leaning back and looking out the window) Okay, fine. Look, I know James is- cute, and athletic, and- somewhat intelligent, but-

REMUS: But?

LILY: He's a jerk. And a bully. I've seen him in the corridors. And not just to Severus. He's mean for no reason, and that's one thing I can't stand. Unnecessary cruelty.

REMUS: So, that's it?

LILY: That's it. I'm in no way attracted to James because of his personality, and not just because he goofs around with that stupid Snitch and messes up his hair to make it look like he just got off his broomstick every bloody minute-

REMUS: Okay. I'll let him know. At least I tried my best.

LILY: You certainly did. But- that doesn't mean I don't have a crush on anyone else, you know.

REMUS: (smiling) Okay, Lily, but I think Slughorn only sees you as a friend-

LILY leans forward and kisses REMUS on the lips. They stay embraced for a few seconds before he breaks away from her.

REMUS: (quietly) What was that?

LILY: I don't know.

They kiss once again, with LILY holding the back of REMUS' neck and running her hands through his hair. From the girls' dormitory, MARLENE descends the staircase. She quickly sees REMUS and LILY together, and, while shocked, she smiles to herself. She quietly goes back to her dorm room without them noticing.
