December 25, 1973

In the Gryffindor common room, LILY sits anxiously in one of the armchairs in the early morning. Finally, the portrait hole opens and REMUS enters.

LILY: (going over to him) Hey.

REMUS: Hey.

LILY: I'm so sorry about last night. I don't know what-

REMUS: It's okay. It wasn't your fault.

LILY: Nevertheless, it shouldn't have been-

From the boys' dormitory, JAMES descends the staircase and enters the common room.

LILY: (angrily) I hope you came down here to apologize.

JAMES remains silent while he walks over to them and sits down at one of the circular tables.

LILY: Did you hear me?

JAMES: I'm sorry I lost my temper.

LILY: That doesn't excuse-

REMUS: Lily, relax. James, I'm sorry I went behind your back with Lily. I didn't mean for it to happen, it just- did, all right?

JAMES: I understand. You started it, didn't you? (He glares at LILY).

LILY: Yes, I did.

JAMES: You just did it to mess with me, right?

LILY: No! Not everything that I do revolves around you, Potter! And it's none of your business who I snog and who I don't-

JAMES: Good. Because I don't care anymore. (He stands up and places a hand on REMUS' shoulder) Mate, I'm sorry I hit you.

JAMES goes to exit the common room.

JAMES: I won't forget what you said last night, Evans. Congratulations, because I hate you, too.

He goes through the portrait hole. REMUS shakes his head and goes up to his dorm. LILY, on the verge of tears, settles back in her armchair and gazes out the window.
