September 2, 1973

Inside the Transfiguration room, the third-years are rather loud and boisterous on the first day of school. MINERVA enters from the back and points her wand at the board, on which an invisible hand begins scrawling notes.

MINERVA: All right, all right! Quiet, everyone! Settle down, now.

SIRIUS and JAMES share a smirk as they sit near the back, with REMUS and PETER in front of them.

MINERVA: (walking down the center aisle) Welcome to your first Transfiguration class of your third year. As you are all aware by now, this class is not one to be taken lightly. The course work for this term will be heavier than in the past. You are recommended to spend at least an hour per day on homework and studying. And yes, Mr. Black, I'm speaking to you.

A general groan is heard among the class, and JAMES nudges SIRIUS while laughing hysterically.

MINERVA: Now, today's first lesson will be a recap of something we learned last term: Beetle Buttons. You will each be distributed a beedle, and I want twenty-five buttons in return within the next few minutes. Off we go-

She opens a small jar and waves her wand across the room, neatly distributing one small black beetle on each desk.

MINERVA: Carry on!

The students set to work on the beetles. JAMES and SIRIUS immediately begin to have trouble keeping them in place.

JAMES: Just hold it- hold it still-

SIRIUS: It's a bit difficult-

JAMES: How hard can it be?

SIRIUS: It's a beetle, it keeps flying away-

JAMES: Hold on- Immobilus!

Immediately, the beetles lie still on the desktop.

SIRIUS: Nice one, James.

From the front of the room, both LILY and MARLENE have transfigured their beetles in no time.

MINERVA: (walking past them) Excellent work, girls.

LILY and MARLENE high-five each other and then look back and JAMES and SIRIUS, laughing quietly.

JAMES: And- got it! (He holds up his black button proudly) Aren't you proud of me, Professor?

MINERVA: (holding back a smile) Very good, Mr. Potter.

PETER attempts to transfigure his beetle, but it flies off his desk. He points his wand at it, transfiguring it in midair, before the button continues flying and hits MINERVA.

PETER: Oops- sorry Professor.

MINERVA: Respectable, Mr. Pettigrew. (She picks up the button and places it on his desk) Now, our next lesson will be a continuation of what you did here, but on a larger scale: Tortoise to Teapot. As an introduction to this lesson, and on my desk by next Wednesday morning, a half-foot of parchment detailing the process of the spell-

More groans are heard throughout the class.

MINERVA: -and the importance of mental concentration when dealing with this branch of magic.

SIRIUS: (to JAMES) Looks like we're gonna be busy.

MINERVA: Take out your quills and we'll begin today's notes, please.

MINERVA gazes at the chalkboard, which has finished writing the lecture notes. The students take out their stationery supplies and being copying them down.
