April 29, 1974

In the Gryffindor common room, the Marauders are sitting around a cluster of chairs playing Exploding Snap.

REMUS: One more hand, come on!

SIRIUS: You're going down, Remus.

They continue to lay cards in a unique pattern, one by one, on the table.

PETER: A Sickle on Remus.

JAMES: You're on.

SIRIUS and REMUS lay their last cards down, with REMUS'S being the winner. SIRIUS'S cards fly into the air and explode in a smoke storm in his face.

PETER: Ha! You lose.

JAMES: Damn it, Sirius! You had one job.

SIRIUS: (laughing) You try beating him at this, the man's unstoppable.

PETER begins a game with REMUS, while JAMES reclines against the sofa.

JAMES: How about that Snape, huh? That greasy git.

SIRIUS: Kid's creepy. I told you since day one.

JAMES: It makes me so angry when he gets us into trouble. And it doesn't help that he's got that Prefect Narcissa Black in his pocket.

SIRIUS: We ought to get him to act up in front of McGonagall sometime. See what she does.

REMUS: No, I reckon she'll still put us in detention. (He lays down a trump card, which in turn explodes in PETER'S face).

JAMES: (taking out the Marauder's Map) What do you think he's up to right now?

SIRIUS: Probably trying to use magic to make himself a friend.

JAMES: (laughing) Yeah. (He slowly examines the Map). Let's see- Dumbledore's in his study, Slughorn's stealing herbs from the greenhouses, and- here he is. He's outside.

SIRIUS: Outside? Where?

JAMES: Looks like he's going down to Hogsmeade.

REMUS: That can't be. It's way past curfew!

JAMES: The Map never lies, Remus, old chap. What's say we go catch him?

REMUS: Absolutely not. You're just asking to get in trouble yourself, plus it's dangerous-

JAMES: Oh, Remus, please. Sirius, what do you say?

SIRIUS: (getting up) Let's do it.

REMUS: I'm serious, you really shouldn't be doing this-

JAMES and SIRIUS don the Invisibility Cloak and make their way out of the Gryffindor common room. REMUS and PETER give each other a nervous glance before they follow their friends into the night.
