Lucas
I take another drag, before blowing the smoke out of the slightly cracked window. I try not to smoke that often because one, my mom hates when I do it, and two even the sluttiest girls don't like when they can taste the cigarettes on your lips and I guess the third reason is that its bad for your health or whatever.
I usually deal with this amount of frustration with sex, but that's not an option at the moment because I'm dating the only virgin on campus, who just happens to be the person I'm frustrated with. In the very rare times that sex isn't an option, I use weed as an outlet but, Jeremiah told me it probably wouldn't be wise of me to show up in front of Scarlett's dorm high out of my mind and confront. Which brings me to why I'm sitting out in my truck, smoking cigarettes. I only bring out the Marlboros when I'm extremely stressed and want to still be able to function properly.
So far I've gone through a cigarette and a half waiting outside of Spalding Hall for Scarlett to come back from wherever the hell she's been lying to me about going. After Juliette told me that she's been leaving every single day since this whole "I'm sick" shit started, I was pissed. I was beyond pissed. I was fuming. The guys calmed me down enough to the point that I wouldn't blow up on her but not enough that I was just going to let her lie and sneak around, while I played the part of the stupid boyfriend.
I figured that she has to come home eventually, so the plan was just to wait and confront her when she finally pulls up into her vacant parking spot. For a girl so smart you would think that she wouldn't have taken her car.
I was thinking that it would take a half hour at the most for her to show up, but it feels like I've been out here for an eternity. I parked a few spaces from her usual parking spot, hoping that she doesn't notice my SUV. I want to catch her by surprise.
Almost another hour past and I'm on the last Marlboro in the pack and pissed once again. I've thoroughly convinced myself that Scarlett's playing me and that she was sent by some scornful chick I've slept with and never called back, to get into my heart and hurt me.
I'm ready to leave and get another pack to continue my stakeout when Scarlett's white dodge charger comes flying into the parking lot. She barely parks her car, before I'm stumbling out my truck and making my way to the car. I knock on the window, causing her to jump in the seat. For a split second, it looks as if she's seen a ghost but she quickly composes herself. She cuts the engine and I back up enough to allow her out of the car.
I take in her appearance. She's wearing a peach colored sweater, jeans and white converses. She doesn't have a coat on and if she wasn't sick before she's going to definitely get sick now running all over the city without a coat in the almost winter.
"We need to talk Scarlett." The tone of my voice shows that I'm not messing around.
"Okay." She simply nods as if she's been expecting this.
"I know you've been lying about being sick."
She hesitates as if she's thinking of a believable lie to tell me but instead she says "Yea. I have been lying to you Lucas."
"I thought we agreed not to lie to each other. What did I tell you when I asked you out?"
"Well, you really didn't ask me out. It was more of a demand, that did not include a clause on lying." She laughs but quickly stops when she sees that I'm not laughing along with her.
"What did I say, Scarlett?"
"You said that you were going to be loyal to me."
"What else did I say?"
"You said that I had all the power in the relationship and that if at any time I wanted to end it I could."
"Do you want to end it? Is that what this is? Is this you trying to find some way to get me to break up with you? Because if that's what you want I will. We can end this now. I'm not going to let myself get played by you Scarlett. I'm the player, not the playee." I look down at her, staring into her eyes, giving her all the power.
" I don't think playee is a real word. That's why you're failing English."
"What the fuck?" Before I can comment on what she said she holds up her hands as if pausing me.
"Ignoring that fact, however. I get it. I'm not the player here. I've just been busy lately with a...situation, that I can't tell you about just yet, but when it's all over I'll tell you everything. I know that I haven't been a girlfriend to you since we got together and I'm sorry I really am. It's just that...I haven't done this in a long time and I know that that's not an excuse for being really shit. It's just- I don't know" She takes a deep breath before continuing. "I know I'm not making any sense. I'm sorry. I don't want us to end, because I really like you. I like us. So please just give me some time and I can make this right again. I need you to trust me, Lucas, please."
Looking down at the girl in front of me, I can feel the anger in me slipping away and I know I can't stay mad at her. I want this to work as much as she does probably even more. I haven't wanted something so bad, in so long and I'll be damned if I let something as petty as a white lie kill our relationship before it can even fully bloom.
"I trust you, Scarlett." I watch as she's flooded with relief.
"Thank you, Lucas." She smiles that contagious smile of hers and I can't help but smile along with her.
"I want to take you out Saturday on a date, a real date. Not some of that cheap shit we do, but some real. I wanna take you somewhere where the menu doesn't have prices because if you need to know the prices, you should not be there."
I get ready for her to put up a fight on my idea. "Okay, I'll buy a new dress."
"You'll look amazing in anything you wear." I go to pull her into a kiss, but she moves out of my embrace. "What's wrong?"
"You smell like a dive bar? Do you smoke?"
"Define smoke." I sheepishly reply. I had almost forgotten that I chain smoked in the car.
"Smoke like cigarettes." She says with an eye roll.
"Sometimes. Only occasionally."
"Ew Lucas that's such a disgusting habit. Stop that." Of course, Miss little angel would scold me on that.
"I will. I am I mean. I won't ever be smoking again." I promise, knowing that I'll hold true to it.
"Good." She says walking around me towards the door of Spalding Hall.
"Am I not going to get my kiss?"
"Not smelling like that you're not. Good night Lucas." She calls over her shoulder and keeps walking into the building.
