School was usually a good distraction from whatever was bothering Wes but the next two days were so slow Wes thought he would rather go back on chemo than deal with everything else. At least there were no more awkward moments with Joel - it was like Joel had forgotten the whole thing. So why was Wes still hanging on?

"Who's that guy?" Kevin asked as they started walking off the field that Thursday after practice.

Wes looked up from the playbook he was trying to memorize. There was a guy standing just past the endzone with a big sign that said "Homecoming?" on it. He had flowers too.

"No idea, but there's no girls up here," Bryan squinted. "Maybe he's lost."

"No," Wes felt his heart stop after he'd gotten his helmet off and his eyes had a chance to focus. He'd know that nervous grin anywhere.

"It's Luke," Kevin said. "What is he doing up here? Wes, who is he asking?"

"Wes?" Bryan grabbed his arm like he was checking to make sure Wes was still breathing. Wes ran a hand over his hair, praying it didn't look like a sweaty mop.

"Oh shit," Kevin whispered.

"Hi," Luke smiled as Wes got closer.

"Hi," Wes said, not able to control his smile anymore.

"So, um, I was wondering," Luke bit his lip and looked down at his sign. "Will you?"

"Yes," Wes nodded. He thought maybe he would pass out but Luke threw his arms around him, even in his sweaty football gear.

"I love you," Luke whispered.

"I love you too," Wes smiled and prayed he didn't start crying. Almost the whole football team was standing there watching them. It felt completely unreal.

"Say yes!" someone shouted.

"He said yes already!" Luke shouted back.

"Now kiss!" someone else yelled.

"Aiden?" Wes looked around.

"No, kiss me," Luke grabbed his chin and kissed him in front of everyone. A crazy cheer went up, guys shouting and stomping the ground. Wes was almost laughing too hard to kiss Luke. Even the football coaches were clapping.

"Thank you," Wes whispered.

"You're welcome," Luke said.

"Can I go change?" Wes asked. "I'm really gross."

"I like you sweaty," Luke winked. "But go on, yeah."

"Thanks," Wes kissed him again and started for the locker room.

He was definitely ready for the jokes and high fives from the rest of the team when they all reached the locker room. What he wasn't expecting were the questions.

"Wait, uh, so it's cool," David was the first one to really say anything. "What you're doing for Luke, I mean, uh, but are you even gay?"

"Yeah, I am," Wes said. "Have been my whole life."

"No, no, but you were with that girl," Jeremiah said. "So you like girls, right?"

"Nope, that was just for show," Wes said. "I never had sex with her."
