“Um, Sassy, I believe that I asked you to keep my hair long. It seems as though you became distracted and cut a god chunk of my hair off.”
“I am really sorry. There is no excuse for my mistake. But seeing as I have made this mistake, I see a way that I can find a way to fix it. The style will be a pixie cut but will flatter your face and reflect your personality. I feel extremely guilty, so hopefully to make your day a little better, I will pick up your tab.”
“Ok.”
Sassy had been given the death response; she didn’t know what to think. Her customer was friendly, but the mistake had really made Jenny mad apparently. But who wouldn’t be? Who wants a terrible haircut? So Sassy mustered all of her energy into fixing Jenny’s hair. She turned the chair around so that she could give Jenny a big reveal.
After an hour of the scissors chopping, Sassy gave Jenny the big reveal.
“ Alright, you’re done.” Sassy was given no answer, as Jenny had just picked up her purse and walked away. This was the second time that Sassy had made a “boo-boo” on a customer’s hair at Swish. Three strikes you’re out, she thought. Sassy had been on a rollercoaster ride all day and just wanted to be home, where she could eat, relax, and sleep. Emily and the person had left the salon as quickly as boy had entered, so Sassy had to lock up. As she was driving home she received a text from Caleb. Hey Sass. we NEED to talk call me mayb? I miss you. J After the crazy day she had, she really just wanted to resolve things. She dialed his number and put him on speaker.
“ Hey Sass. I really didn’t know that you were actually going to call.”
“ Hey Caleb.”
“ Baby, I miss you. I miss your laugh. I want you home, not far away in London. I want you to follow me to Florida, where I’m gonna be playing Baseball! Living my dream!”
“ Well for you to be playing baseball wouldn’t you have to pass the drug tests? And I have a dream too, you know. ”
“ Oh well, I found this guy who has a stash of some stuff that doesn’t show up on the tests. Baby, who cares about drugs? I just miss your smile. I want you back. I thought things were going fine, but then next thing I know, you’re gone. ”
“ Caleb. Stop the drugs please. The only thing you are doing is hurting your body. And Caleb, I do miss you, The old you, The one that called me late at night, when my mom was asleep. I miss the boy who would dance in front of the packed Stadium at half time just to ask me out. The one who didn’t care about being Mr. Popular. But you changed, ever since you found drugs. The last year of college was terrible. I hated fighting with you. You were my first love, but you made me hate you as quickly as I had fallen in love with you. So the best thing for me to do was leave. And all my friends were going.”
“ Sassy. I still love you.”
“Caleb. I cannot keep doing this. I don’t want to go back to the same pattern of you trying to push me into doing drugs. And I hate fighting. So Caleb, I am over you. Please, Please stop the drugs, but I know that you won’t listen to me because you never really did.” Sassy hung up the phone, and just started balling. She ran into the house, just as the rain had started to pour and the thunder clash. She ran to her room, past all the girls in the kitchen. As soon as she heard the kitchen grow quiet and feet tip toe upstairs she knew her friends were coming to see what was wrong. As much as she loved her friends, Sassy needed time alone just to have a pity party. She didn’t want to talk. But Callie, Michaela, and Lizzy, knew that sometimes you just need time alone, so they quietly walked into Sassy’s room. And laid beside Sass on her bed, Twix bars, Ben & Jerry’s, spoons for the ice cream and water. They left her room, not even bothering to ask Sassy what was wrong.
The rest of the night, the house was quiet. The entire mood had shifted once Sassy came home, and every one was respectful. When Sassy could get out of her head, she would hear snippets of conversations in the other rooms. Michaela had a great day, and so did Lizzy. Callie’s boss, Sam, asked her on a date, and she didn’t know what to do. But Callie’s problem was not as bad as Sassy. She still loved Caleb although it seemed as if she didn’t. And hearing his voice made her miss him, but she knew what a monster he had become with some of the drugs and alcohol. Sassy sat in her room, her eyes waterfalls. Wishing and hoping that life would any better. Seeing Harry at the salon, ripped Sassy’s heart in two. She thought that she had gotten along with him really well. She cried herself to sleep that night.
The next morning, Sassy was preparing to face the day, and what might ensue. She avoided the girls, even though they looked like they really wanted to help. She just wanted to solve her own problems. Just as Sassy was walking out the door, she received a call.
“Hello.”
“Hey Sassy, It’s Dr. Renner.” Bewildered, Sassy asked.
“Hey Dr. Renner. I didn’t know Caleb ever gave you my number.”
“Oh well.” He stopped mid sentence. His voice strained, as though his breath was being sucked from him. He cleared his throat.
“ Caleb didn’t give me your number. I copied it off his phone. You see, Sassy, Caleb died last night of and overdose of some drugs.”
