Mr. Renner paused to let the news register, then he continued.

“ I know that he had a few issues with drugs, but I had no idea that this would happen. He was found on his bed dead. He was late for an early morning practice. His mother is devastated. We figured that the best way to figure what was going on in our son’s life would be looking at his phone. I saw that ya’ll had talked last night, so I wanted to know what went down.’

“ He called me last night to try and get back together with me, but I said no. He changed after he became addicted; there was nothing that I could do to make him stop using. Last night, I just told him that I did love him, just the old him.”

“ Well, we were looking at some other things on his phone, and we were looking at his notepad app. And we found a note written specifically to you. Would you like for me to read it? Or would you rather I take a screen shot of it.”

“ Would you take a screen shot of it?”

“ I don’t mind. And Sassy, you were a daughter to Beatrice and I. I was sorry to se you leave.”

“ And I was sorry to go, but Caleb had changed, and it obviously got the better of him. I am truly sorry for your loss.”

“Thank you Sassy. I sent the screen shot. Goodbye.”

Sassy went back into the house and into her room. She called Emily and left a voicemail. “Hello Emily, It’s Sassy. I want to call you to tell you that I am sick and will not be coming to work today. Sorry for the late notice. Hope you have a great day.” As soon as her phone said call ended, Sassy looked at the message sent by Dr. Renner. The note from Caleb said, “ Hey Sassy. You are reading this because I am no longer living. My parents probably are reading this too, but I want to say that I didn’t die from accidental overdose. I killed myself. I felt that I had no purpose in life without you. I called you to see whether or not you would take me back. But you said no. You broke my heart a second time Sassy. I meant every word that I said to you. I love you, but since I cannot have you, I see no reason for living. I did drugs for a while, when we were together, but my addiction go t worse after you left. I wanted to have the same feeling I did with you, without you. And calling you was my last resort. I love you, but don’t cry over my death. I am not worth it. You did love me, but you don’t now. So don’t cry unless you really love me, but I guess I never will really know whether or not you cry. Because if you are reading this, then I’m gone. Gone for good.

I love you. Goodbye.

Caleb Allen Renner.”

By the time Sassy finished reading this, Lizzy was in the room attempting the shaking Sassy. The room was tense, as Lizzy didn’t know what to do or how to comfort Sassy. But Lizzy knew that Sassy would need something to cheer her up. Sassy would need some time to get her mind off Caleb’s suicide. Lizzy devoted all her time that day cleaning the house to prepare for a special night to help Sassy.

The once bubbly Sassy had now become depressed at the thought that she was the one who depressed Caleb enough to take his life. The girls came home a little early, and they decided to go as a group to talk to Sassy.

“ Hey Sassy.” Callie said walking in the room smelling of chlorine.

“ Hey Sass.” Michaela sighed.

“ We just wanted to talk to you. We have given you time to sulk, but we are really worried about you. Do you want to open up about everything to all of us? WE know that you’re depressed and we want to help you.” Lizzy said, gently sitting down next to Sassy.

“I really don’t want to talk about it, but it would be good for ya’ll to know. Caleb killed himself by overdosing on drugs. And he killed himself because I would not get back together with him. That’s what was most of my issue. But I just feel terrible that I was the reason he killed himself.” Sassy mumbled into her pillow.
