Chapter Eighteen
"Don't you kids have homework or something?" My father groaned, my smile never faltering.
"No, sir."
He looked to my left at Ryder for help, seeing none, he nodded his head in my delight.
Ryder laughed behind me, as we made our way to the barn.
"He's right though, we shouldn't ride too far, I've only had two lessons."
I nodded, before throwing a saddle pad at Ryder so that he understood that he would have to tack up Midnight on his own.
He groaned before starting towards her stall, and I skipped happily to Rebel's.
Today was Kelsey's birthday and we planned to surprise her, but Ryder's motorcycle was too loud and dangerous, in my opinion, so we would take the horses as an element of surprise.
I hadn't contacted her at all, so she probably figured that I had forgotten, seeing as the sun was beginning to set. I could hear Ryder's frustrations as Midnight moved around her stall to avoid the bit, and I began to get upset myself.
"Don't let her do that, Ryder. It's a very bad habit to get accustomed to."
Ryder groaned before wrapping an arm around the top of her head and pushed off the wood of her stall. He pulled her head down before putting the bridle behind her ears.
"Ha, I win, horse."
I laughed silently at Ryder's immaturity, but she was a hard-to-handle horse at times so I understood the feeling.
"Ready to head out?"
I asked as I mounted Rebel's saddle covered back, Ryder grunted as he did the same to Midnight before following me into the night.

The gravel road was horrible for the horses' feet so we found ourselves in the ditch, going the half a mile stretch to Kelsey's home. Ryder was behind me, Midnight just simply following Rebel rather than Ryder controlling her.
"How much farther?"
Ryder asked behind me, his voice cracking slightly. He was nervous, I could tell. Horses have made him nervous since that first night that he was in the barn.
"Just around this bend, then a couple houses down." I assured him.
Just as we passed a yellow house, I realized it was Ansel's just as we heard a yell.
Midnight spooked, backing up quickly as I heard a string of curse words leave Ryder's mouth. I jumped off Rebel, grabbing the reins and then reaching for Midnight's. With both horses's reins in my hands, I spoke softly to Midnight, calming her down.
I looked up to meet the frightened green eyes that were staring down at me.
"Ryder, are you okay."
He nodded his head quickly, saying yes, but his hands were shaking. I rubbed his thigh, feeling his muscles in his body relax.
"Shh, it's okay, you're okay."
Ryder chuckled breathlessly, "You're calming me down the same way that you calmed down Midnight."
I smiled at his observation, hearing someone approach behind me, my hand slipped from Ryder's leg as I spun around.
