Chapter Thirty Three

*Shay’s POV*

Time slowed.

Seconds slowly ticked by.

Ryder’s face slowly began to show recognition of who Zach truly was and just like that, he was gone.

“No!” Ryder yelled out, running towards Zach’s falling body.

I stood frozen in place, could I truly mourn for his death after everything that he did to my family? Could Ryder after he abandoned him hoping to beat him out?

Life was complicated that way, I knew I would mourn for him because he was dead despite the things that he committed while he was living. I couldn’t understand it but I knew I was going to honor it.

I followed Ryder and watched as he slowly kneeled down to Zach’s body. He felt him before staring for a few seconds.

“He’s dead.” He whispered.

Ansel and Kyle slowly approached.

“That’s… your brother?” Ansel asked, confusion ringing in his voice.

Ryder didn’t answer.

Kyle was biting his lip in anticipation.

Ryder stood up quickly, “Who shot the gun?”

Walking quickly over to Kyle, he grabbed his shirt, bringing him off of his feet by a few inches.

“It was you, wasn’t it?” Ryder accused. “You little shit, I didn’t even get a chance… he was my brother, I had a chance.” He stopped himself.

“Ryder,” I whispered softly, grabbing his arm and pulling him away from Kyle. His grip on Kyle’s shirt was released and Kyle fell in a heap to the floor.

“I-I’m sorry, Ryder. I didn’t know, I was trying to help.” Kyle stuttered.

I pulled Ryder away from the group and they politely kept their distance.

“I shouldn’t have done that.” He whispered, holding my hips. “I should’ve kept my emotions under control.”

I quickly shook my head, “Ryder, you just saw your brother get shot,” Ryder flinched. “Your reaction was quite justified. I would’ve cried.”

Ryder pulled me tighter against him, “It made me look weak.”

“No, Ryder. That’s what humans do, they get emotional, and you can too. I want you to, you don’t look weak.” I tried explain as I rubbed my hands up and down his back.

He placed his forehead on mine, “Thank you, Shay.”

I looked up at him, “I’m very sorry about Zach… or Eddie.”

He closed his eyes softly, his eyelashes brushing softly against my cheeks.

“I am as well. How did you know?”

I sighed, “He told me in that room.”

Ryder nodded, before grabbing my hand and pulling me back to the rest of the group.

“I need answers. I have to know why they did what they did to me. I deserve it and I plan on getting it. Is everyone in?”

There were a chorus of “Yes” before Ryder turned to walk.

“Wait.”

Ryder turned his body to face Kyle as he stepped forward.

“I am so incredibly sorry, Ryder. I had no idea that was your brother, I was trying to protect you, Shay and Kelsey, I-“

 Ryder cut him off.

“Its fine, Kyle. I understand your motives.” Ryder gave him a pat on the shoulder.

I walked behind him, watching as his back muscles flexed if a sound was made by our feet.

“They know we’re here now.” His voice was hard. “They’ll be excepting us.”

Kelsey walked faster in order to walk in pace with me, our legs moving together.

“Well, how are you doing?” She asked, her breathing uneven.

“Better now, I guess. It seems like so much has happened in past few days that I can’t seem to keep my own head above the water, I’m constantly drowning.” I sighed.

She frowned, “I can understand your frustration, and how’s Ryder doing?”

I glanced ahead of me, his body was moving at a fast pace so that we all had to jog in order to keep up. But I knew right now that he was in ‘business mode’ and that scared me. I truly didn’t know what he was capable of, the things that he’s done with these men. But at the same time, I think of who Ryder truly is, not the man that has been kicked around like a small puppy, but the man that he showed me at my family’s farm. A man who truly did care for other people, who cared for me.

“He’s emotional,” I answered to Kelsey. “He’s not usually this way, and he never really like Zach so this has just makes things tougher for him. He wants for mourn for the boy he knew to be his brother but Zach is nothing like that anymore. He’s also been taught that crying and sadness is weak and that he shouldn’t do it, but keeping these emotions inside of him will only hurt him more.”

Kelsey nodded, “He’s a hurt man.”

I nodded in agreement just as we stopped in front of a door.

“This is it.” Ryder commanded before opening the door to the group.
