After another long day of questioning, which today seemed to be more about what truly happened that day at Black Blood headquarters rather than Ryder’s past. Chris allowed me to look through Ryder’s file then he didn’t speak of it again.
Sighing I walked out of the police station, beginning to hate it in there. Outside, my father sat in his truck.
“Thanks for picking me up,” I told him as I sat myself in the passenger seat.
He gave me a swift nod as I buckled myself in. An awkward silence filled the car.
“Dad, I’m sorry.” I blurted out.
My father glanced at me before sighing and shaking his head.
“No, Shay, it’s fine. I needed to hear everything you said because you were right. Your mother and I didn’t truly get over what happened to Julia and I’m sorry that we took it out on you.”
I smiled at my father, feeling content.
“Is Mom mad?”
Sighed, he put his weight onto the steering wheel.
“I don’t truly think she’s mad at you but more at herself, she’ll come around.”
I nodded, leaning my head back and we both stay silent the rest of the way home.
Pulling into our driveway, Ryder was seated on the front porch. As my father parked his truck, Ryder stood up heading towards it.
Opening my door for me, he leaned across my lap to unbuckle my seatbelt. Flutters of butterflies flew around in my stomach as he let his hand run across my hip to my stomach slowly bringing the seatbelt back up.
“Would you like to go on a ride with me?” He asked, giving me a quick kiss on the cheek.
My father stepped out of the truck and walked back inside of the house.
“Sure.” I answered, a slight blush on my cheeks by the affection Ryder had shown me in front of my father.
After we saddled up the horses, we started out on the small trail that went to the meadow.
“Why the sudden urge to want to go on a ride?” I asked, glancing around behind me to see Ryder watching Midnight intently.
“We need to stop first, still not comfortable enough to ride and talk.” I giggled softly before pulling Rebel to a stop and hopping off her back. Taking her bridle off, I allowed her to graze on the grass. Walking over to Midnight, I held her reins while Ryder slid off and then took off Midnight’s bridle as well and watched as she went to go graze next to Rebel.
Ryder grabbed my hand, pulling me a little away from the horses.
“We haven’t had any alone time in a while,” Ryder answered my previous question. “I don’t count talking in a police station.” He added.
I nodded, as we both sat down in the tall grasses, making sure to glance back and check on the horses.
“I just feel like you’re consistently searching for more answers about me, but yet, you fail to ask me. Shay, if you have any concerns about me or my past, ask away. I want to be open with you.” Ryder offered up, as I ran my hands through the cool dirt.
“I don’t know what to ask, to be honest.” I confessed, a slight blush on my cheeks.
Ryder leaned back, his back resting on the soft grass.
“I can wait.”
I laid down next to him.
“I went through the rest of your file this morning,” I blurted out, as Ryder shot up.
“How?” He croaked out.
“Chris, my interrogator, gave it to me. I’m sorry, I just truly wanted to know about your past but I didn’t know the questions to ask so I just went through it.” I admitted.
Ryder licked his lips, “Shay, this is what I mean! You would rather go through my file at the police station than hear it from me. How is that even legal?”
I shrugged, feeling guilty.
Ryder furrowed his eyebrows, “It seems like this Chris guy wants you to think bad of me, huh?”
“It’s not thinking badly of you, Ryder.” I rolled my eyes, feeling annoyed. “It’s your past, it’s more like a bad side of you.”
Ryder looked down to his lap, as I bit my lip.
“Ryder, that’s not what I meant-“
He cut me off, grabbing my hands in his.
“Shay, I know that I’m not as good as I made myself out to be and I’m sorry for lying to you like that but don’t turn against me, my entire family has already done that to me.” Ryder pleaded, his eyes searching mine.
“Then, from now on, be completely honest with me about everything, even if it hurts.”
“I promise.” Ryder kissed my knuckles tenderly.

I watched Ryder’s bare back as he looked through my dresser for a shirt to wear to bed, a pair of grey sweatpants slung low on his hips.
“So tomorrow, I’m going back to work.” Ryder announced, as I smiled.
“Great, I bet you missed it.”
Ryder shrugged, before tugging on a grey shirt, hiding his toned chest from my view.
“Yeah, Juan, the asshole who can never get my name right,” Ryder let out a laugh, causing my smile to widen. “He called me and was like “Eh, Ryan. You ever coming back to work? I was starting to think you quit, but when you do come back, bring Takis. Bye bro.” He still can’t get my name right but knows that he wants Takis.” Ryder laughed some more before beginning to lay down next to me.
“No sir,” I giggled, pushing him back onto his blow up mattress as Ryder smirked. “Remember what my father said, if he finds you in my bed at any point in time, he’ll make you sleep in the barn. I certainly don’t think that barn will be your new smell.”
Ryder laughed before reaching over to get his comforter that had fallen off his small air mattress when something caught my eye. Standing up, I walked over to the window. I spotted a silhouette of a person, but when I blinked it was gone.
“What’s wrong, babe?” Ryder asked, walking forward to wrap an arm around my waist.
Giving him a faint smile, I shrugged.
“Nothing, I just thought I saw something.”
