"Dude what is your problem??" Laf fumed the next day. "Why'd you storm out of there? SO. What if you're gay." Alex turned on Laf in the small dorm they shared.

"It is not my problem that I can't trust you. No one wanted you to tell mulligan and I defiantly don't want you telling Laurens! I don't need one more person thinking I'm a freak! Why does it matter to-"

Laf cut Alex off, "To me? I'll tell you why! Because no one here judges you! If you keep denying who you are, you'll end up alone. And another reason! You set off the whole mood when you stormed out. I could've gotten LAID last night and you RUINED it!" Laf said indignantly, bringing a smile to Alex's face. Lafayette was right. If Laf didn't judge him, why should Mulligan or even... mm. Best not think about him.
"What'd you think of Laurens, Alex?" Laf said, getting exceedingly close. Laf always knew when someone was hiding something. "I- nothing, Laf. Butt out." Alex said, pushing Laf away.

"Yah right. You think he's hot. I KNOW YOU ALEX." Laf said with a smirk on his face.

"SHUT UP. I can't do this, Lafayette! I can't be free like you guys. It's just not worth it. I'd end up bringing pain to myself." Alex's eyes filled with tears, and he looked down, but not quick enough. Now your f*cking screwed.

"Alex. You have GOT to tell me what's going on. What happened where you can't trust your meilleur ami anymore? Laf's eyes were full of loving concern. It broke Alex.

"When I was young, like, really really young I said I liked a boy on the street where I grew up to my father. He had- the prettiest eyes. But my father didn't see that. He only saw this -this thing that he raised to be a queer - a freak."

"I was beaten half unconscious and didn't receive any help; my mother was too afraid to stand up to my father. By then James had already died, had already left me." Alex's voice broke. He took a deep breath and continued.
"Somehow, the boy from the street found out about my feelings. He told the whole neighborhood of children. I was the freak from the street, the rag-tag gay. I eventually got to New York but I swore I would never tell anyone else unless I really, truly trusted them. And even that was a risk. Because I trust you and you almost spilled."

Alex couldn't stop the tears falling from his cheeks but he could stop from being humiliated. "Laf, the thing is, you can't choose to hurt, but you can choose who hurts you."

"My god. Alex, i'm so sorry. I had no idea. You should've told me. Told someone! You know I would never intentionally cause you hurt." Laf whispered. Then his eyes lit up as Alex bruched away his tears and gave Laf a small smile. "Yeah. Yeah, I know." Laf hugged his friend and then stood up. "Did you know.... Laurens is gayer than you."

"You don't say..."
