Promise

*19 years old*
Today was my one year anniversary with Shawn. We planned to go out on a picnic at the park. We both packed  the lunch and a blanket to sit on and headed out.

When we arrived, we set out our things and ate. We talked and laughed for about an hour before Shawn pulled a little black box out of his pocket.

He looked me in the eyes before saying:

"(Y/n), even though we have only dated one year now, I feel like we have a special connection, nothing like I've felt with anyone before. I have a special sort of love for you, one that makes me nervous and overjoyed at the same time. I know we are still young but I want to marry you one day, so while I wait, I'd like to give you a promise ring in place of a wedding ring."

I put a hand to my mouth, tears of happiness in my eyes. I nodded, unable to express how happy I was with words, and put out my hand and he slipped the ring on. It was a beautiful silver ring with a (favorite /stone) in the middle.

Once it was securely on my ring finger, I hugged him round his neck and whispered a simple "Thank you."

*four years later, age 22*
I walk down the aisle, to meet my soon-to-be husband, Shawn. When it is time to put on wedding ring, I slip off the promise ring Shawn gave to me four years ago, and replace it with a gold wedding ring with five diamonds on, each one symbolizing a year of dating. I replaced my old ring for one he promised me, so very long ago.
