I love you

The wind was howling and the sky was grey. A small group of people, about 20 ,were gathered on the beach. The sand stung their legs and their hair was blowing everywhere, but no one complained. A man near the front of the group held a wooden chest. He had tears slipping silently down his cheek. Two girls were at his side, one younger and the other a few years older. The younger one was holding his hand and sobbing, the older one stood silently, hiding her emotions.

Slowly, the man opened the chest. Inside it was filled with the ashes of his wife. She had committed suicide, not being able to bear the pain of loosing her own mother. The older girl winced at the sight of her cremated mother, but maintained her composure.

The man started to spread the ashes, letting them blow freely into the wind. The rest of the group was silent, some crying, others keeping themselves together. The only sound was of the smaller girl, who was now howling. She had let go of her fathers hand and was now clinging onto her sister as if her life depended on it. The older girl still stayed calm, rubbing her sister's back soothingly.

Once the man was finished spreading his wife's ashes, he took the smaller girl in his arms. The rest of the group said their condolences before heading off. The only people left on the beach were the two girls, their father and the older girls boyfriend. The man and smaller girl went for a walk, both silently crying and comforting each other. The older girl turned to her boyfriend and put on a brave smile.

He saw right through it and opened his arms out wide. She stumbled, numbly, into his warm embrace. He whispered something to her and she nodded. She clung onto him, like the smaller girl had with her. She herself seemed small and helpless in his arms, not like the strong girl she had been standing on her own.

Slowly, a tear raced down her cheek. It was the start of many. Soon she too was bawling her eyes out, holding onto her boyfriend. He hugged her close and whispered soothing things into her ear. He kissed the top of her head and held her, staying strong for her sake. Once she had calmed down, she kissed him on the lips, and he could taste her salty tears. She pulled away and leaned into his embrace one more, resting her head on his chest.

She let three words slip out her mouth and fly away into the wind with her mothers ashes: "I love you."
