Three empty words

It had been two months now. Shawn only gave me quick pecks, no long or passionate kisses, only a few quick hugs and the only dates we went on now were rare and short: half an hour at the most. But worst of all, he hadn't told me he loved me once...

We were on one of our rare dates at Starbucks and Shawn was on his phone texting, nothing unusual. I sat at the table, looking into my coffee cup and took a sip. "Are you alright?" Shawn asked, surprising me. He had taken a break to look up at me. I sighed. I needed to confront him.

"Shawn, you've been really distant lately. I'm worried about you. Is something wrong? Two months, two months since it seems like we were an actual couple..." I say, fiddling with a ring on my finger, a nervous habit I have.

He put his phone on the table and I looked up at him. He looked guilty. "I'm sorry, (y/n). I'm really sorry. I've been trying to fix our relationship, but I don't know...we don't have the same connection we used to. There's a reason I've been distant, I hate lying to you."

I frowned. "What do you mean, Shawn. I don't see a problem with us, it just seems like one day you stopped loving me. I still love you, we can make this work!!" I say, putting my hand in his.

He shook his head. "I'm sorry, (y/n), I can't say those three empty words anymore, I'm sorry. I don't love you anymore."

In that moment, I swore I heard my heart crack into a million tiny fragments. I opened my mouth, not knowing what to say, but no sound came out anyways. I slipped my hand off his and stood up. I placed the money for my drink on the table and speed walked as far away from Shawn as possible.

As I walked past the window, I saw him sitting with his head in his hands. The man I still love. He called them three empty words, when I thought they had been full of hope and joy: a beautiful relationship. But to him, they were nothing.

To him, they were just those three empty words.
