Hate

"Mom! Why do you always do this?! You know Shawn and I hate each other!" I exclaimed. "(Y/n), I already told you. Karen and I are friends, I don't know why you have a problem with Shawn...he's a lovely boy." My mom said, sounding tiered. "And please make an effort, you can't stay in your room the whole time their here." She said, eyeing me cautiously.

I let out a groan and stomped off to my room, like a toddler throwing a tantrum, but right now I didn't care how I looked. Shawn Mendes and the rest of his family were coming to our house for dinner, but Shawn and I have never gotten along. He seems so sweet and kind in front of my parents, but as soon as their backs are turned, he's spitting hateful comments at me.  I can't stand him.

I flopped onto my bed, not bothering that everyone would be arriving soon. Why should I make an effort? I'll just stay in my black leggings and hoodie. I grabbed my earphones and sat on my bed listening to music and scrolling through Twitter. Eventually I pulled my earphones out and heard the voices of our guests. I sighed. Time to face the music.

I exited my room and went to greet everyone. Shawn's family were some of the sweetest people I'd ever met, I couldn't understand how they had such an annoying child. The parents headed to the living room and Aaliyah and my little sister went to her room. "(Y/n), why don't you and Shawn take a walk to the park?" Mom asked. 'I'd rather walk around in wet socks for the rest of my life.' I thought, but instead nodded because Karen was still there.

"I just need to get some shoes." I told Shawn. He didn't even respond, just pulled out his phone and started texting someone. I didn't expect much else, so I went to slip on some Nikes and came back to find Shawn waiting on the front garden. "Took you long enough." He mumbled, and I bit back my sour response.

The rest of the walk was quiet, aside from the background noise families in their houses and a few dogs barking. When we arrived, I went over and sat on the swing. Shawn sat on the one beside me and I decided to make and attempt at healing our relationship, for mom's sake. "Why do you hate me?"

Shawn looked at me confused. "What are you talking about? I don't hate you." He replied, frowning. I raised my eyebrows. "You made it pretty clear that basically since we met, you never liked me." I replied. It was getting dark now, so I couldn't see his face, but I heard him sigh. "Remember Shay?" He asked, which kind of surprised me. Shay had been my first 'boyfriend' although we only lasted a week. "My ex?" I asked. I saw Shawn nod out the corner of my eye.

"Ever since you started going out with guys, starting with Shay, I always felt bitter around you. It's so hard to act nice when you feel jealous ." Shawn mumbled, barely audible. I was taken aback...Shawn was jealous of me? "Why were you jealous?" I asked, gently. He faced me, and even in the light of the setting sun, I could still see the blush creeping up his cheeks. "Because I love you."

My breath hitched in my throat and my head spun a little. The guy I hated, just said he loved me. Was it possible I loved him back? I thought about it for a second before realizing I did. "I love you too, Shawn." I mumbled. He looked at me, a stunned expression on his face. Then he grabbed my face and smashed his lips onto mine. I closed my eyes and melted into the kiss, our lips moving perfectly in sync. Eventually, oxygen forced us apart and we pulled away, panting. I slid off the swing to sit on the floor and Shawn joined me.

"You should have said sooner." I mumbled to Shawn. I rested my head on his shoulder and he wrapped an arm around me. "I wish I had." He whispered, quietly.
