She had never been inside the Alpha's personal quarters before today, and the space was impressive in its size and grandeur. A cathedral ceiling was adorned with several skylights, a large one situated right above the four-poster bed so that the Alpha and Luna could stare up into the stars from the comfort of their mattress.

Instead, right now, her Luna was perched in the center of that California-king, completely naked and sobbing mightily as the pack's doctor, a petite man with beautiful, flowing black locks named Ricky, was fishing several gloved fingers around inside her body. He wrinkled his nose and licked his lips in concentration as he seemed to search for something, and Amara continued to cry great heaving sobs.

Rain felt an overwhelming sadness for the situation. She was the youngest pup in her family and had never been allowed around any of the she-wolves when they were in labor. Seeing Amara's pained expression mixed with abundant tears, Rain felt that perhaps she had been unwittingly protected all these years. She wondered why the Luna had had to take such a liking to her, why she had been asked to attend the birth, and there was an odor of bitterness to the thought. Couldn't she have been spared further?

Ricky sat back then, removed his gloves, and turned toward his Alpha, who was stalking the length of the large room as though they were all potential prey. "She's progressing just fine, but she has quite a ways to go yet. I think she will do better, feel safer and more comfortable if we clear the room out, and it's just the two of you. Just be supportive and loving, attend to her needs and try to keep her calm. Do not let her shift," he warned in a stern voice. "I cannot stress that enough! If she shifts, she will endanger the pup."

Chris nodded but his expression was far away, lost in some mental quagmire that was far beyond the walls of this space. He began to fidget with his fingers, nervously twisting his collection of rings. "How much longer do we have?"

"Hours," Ricky chuckled nervously. "Her labor has only just begun, and this is her first pup. I wouldn't be surprised if she wasn't ready to push for another ten to fifteen hours yet."

The Alpha's face paled at this, his brown eyes growing panicked. His voice was barely above a horrified whisper: "Ten to fifteen hours?"

Ricky nodded, then placed a comforting hand onto the other man's shoulder. "Try to get her to relax. When she's relaxed enough, get her to take a nap with you. You're both going to need your strength for the labor ahead. If that fails, run her a nice warm bath and get in with her. The key here is to keep her relaxed and calm, to try to take her mind off of her pain. She's hurting already, Chris, and it's only going to get worse for her. But do not tell her that! Show her some love, show her that you're going to be here for her and the pup. She needs you right now, more than she ever has."

The Alpha nodded but the words were a jumbled mess in his mind, as everything was a jumbled mess in his mind at that very moment. His expression was a mixture of terror and numbness, his gaze transfixed straight ahead as though he was seeing everything and nothing all at that very moment.

Hearing the doctor's recommendations, Rain decided to make her hasty exit. Wanting to do right by her Luna, who was a sweet, kind-hearted young woman that was currently in pain and scared, she approached the other she-wolf and placed a tender kiss to her forehead. "I'm going to go back to my room for a few hours," Rain whispered softly to Amara. "Try to get some rest, okay? I'll be back with the doctor in a little while, but for now, you should rest and try to calm yourself."
