Her mate stepped out of the examination room with tears coursing down his cheeks. Rain knew how exhausted he was, and that the emotional heft of this situation was not going to help her mate; and certainly not going to allow him to get some good sleep anytime soon. Instead of arguing or trying to chastise him and send him to bed, she simply opened her arms wide to beckon him to her. "I love you, Beta Sitkowski," she chimed, hoping to make him smile.
He did, but it was forced. He took the seat beside her and drew her into his arms, nearly onto his lap as he buried his face into her chest and inhaled deeply. "I never want to be Alpha," he coughed into her cleavage. "Ever."
Rain laughed. "I doubt that your brother ever intends to relinquish his hold on the pack."
"Good," Ryan snorted. "I don't want it!"
Sensing a chance to interrupt, Rick sat down across from the pair and frowned. "We must discuss Isolde's care."
Taking in a deep, cleansing breath, Ryan sighed, defeated. "She wishes to die, and I cannot bring myself to order you to go against her wishes. She's distraught at the loss of the pup and –"
"I understand this, but she's not going to die," the doctor interrupted with a cautious smile. "She has lost a lot of blood, yes, and she lost the pup. While Rain was sitting with her, I gave her a blood transfusion and cauterized what I could." He paused to make sure that the couple understood his words, and then he continued. "There is absolutely no reason that she won't live a long and fulfilling life. However, there is some news that is going to be very difficult for her to handle."
Rain held her breath. "What is that?"
"I would be entirely shocked if she is able to bear pups," Rick confessed, his expression dropping with sadness for the young she-wolf. "Her body has sustained considerable trauma from this tragic and freak miscarriage, and I sincerely doubt that she will be able to carry any future pups to term."
Ryan said nothing as Rain's eyes filled with tears. "But she wants a pup so badly," the she-wolf pleaded. "That was one of the first things that she confessed to me when we met, and I was pregnant with Christopher."
Rick bowed his head. "I understand very much what the little she-wolf desires," he stated softly, and each word was coated in pure sympathy. "I simply have to say that it is a great unlikelihood for Isolde. In fact, I fear that if she continues to try to get pregnant, the very same thing that happened last night will continue to happen to her and her pups."
"Well fuck," Ryan frowned deeply as he clutched his mate close. "This news is going to break her." Rain placed a gentle kiss to the tip of his nose and he smiled sadly, before he looked up and met Rick's troubled blue eyes. "Where's Vin?"
