Author's Note: I am SO SORRY that this story has had to take a backseat for such a long time. Life has just gotten away from me, and White Lightning had to be low on the priority list. I do apologize but THANK YOU x 10,000 to all the people who are still reading, who have taken an interest, and who comment/vote. It means the world to me! I'm sorry that I can't respond to everyone and that my Wattpad time has become so limited, but please know that I read everything and it means a lot.
This chapter bounces around a lot between all the characters, but now that we're into the action I wanted to give multiple POVs on what's happening.
Layla was clutching handfuls of her best friend's skater dress as she tried to prevent Rain from climbing back up the stairs and out of the bunker. "Quit it!" she screeched in aggravation as the other she-wolf began to fight harder. "He told you to bring everyone down here, right? That means that something really bad has happened and he doesn't want you or the pups wandering around outside." Pausing to push her wild blonde locks away from her sweaty face, she sighed. "You have to quit freaking out, because you're scaring the pups!'
Rain harrumphed as she was guided over to a cot and seated beside her very confused and frightened young son. Without emotion, she promised "It's okay" as she placed a kiss onto the top of his head. Sleeping soundly beside him, burritoed in blankets, little Annabelle hadn't woken up since their surprise flight into the shelter.
Her seven visitors were actually doing far better than she, Layla's pups were a blend of excitement and exhaustion. Fighting to keep his blue eyes open, Val simply whimpered, "Where daddy?" as his big sister Ellie bounced on a cot and cheered. "Let me out! Chrissy said I'm a Damma! Let me at 'em! I'll help Chrissy save the pack!"
Seated on another cot, Isolde was tending to a sleeping Oliver and Molly, all while keeping a close eye on Sophia, who kept edging nearer and nearer to her crush, Val. Tears filling her gemstone eyes, she sniffed quietly. "I feel in my heart that something tragic has befallen my mate. Our connection has ceased to be and all I feel is an endless, suffocating void."
Placing a hand onto the other she's knee, Layla tried to be comforting. "I'm sure that he's okay," she offered in her best approximation of a nurturing tone. "Maybe it's just a-"
"No," Isolde shook her long white-blonde ponytail and hiccupped. "I know that he has left this plane of existence. I know it in my heart of hearts. That spark that bound us together, that spark has left me."
"My connection to Ryan is weak," Rain joined her friend in sobbing. "Something's very wrong. Something happened out there and -"
Layla shook her head and eyed both of the other she-wolves. "Going up there to investigate is the opposite of what Ry told you to do, right? He said to take everyone and stay down here until he or Chris came to get you. We can't just ignore a request from our Beta." She paused and then tried to force a smile. "I know, I know, I'm normally the last person to show any respect for Ryan and his ridiculous title, but something is telling me that -"
Rain raised her tear-stained cheeks. "Something's very wrong."
"No shit, Sherlock," Layla tried to offer some comedic respite as she tried to get Ellie to stop climbing on the shelves full of canned goods and supplies. "If everything was kosher, we wouldn't be hiding out in the Cloverfield bunker."
Now clutching Oliver to her chest and rocking the little pup slowly, Isolde's eyes were puffy and red but she had momentarily staunched her tears. "Is your mate alright, Layla? Have you been able to reach out and make contact with Richard?"
She and her mate had been babysitting for the Alpha's pups, baby Oli and the little princess, Sophia, but she hadn't wanted to spend the night alone while her mate was on patrol. Instead, she had gone to Layla and Rick's house to spend the night, but they had ended up here to visit with Rain and the children. Now she feared that there would be no home to return to. It all left her so exhausted, and her heart was scattered in a million pieces at her feet at the thought of losing her mate.
Layla shook her head slowly. "No, I haven't. I can sense him at the end of the link, but he's locked that wall down tight. Whatever is going on, he doesn't want me to know. And if he doesn't want me to know, it's..." her voice trailed off and then she shrugged. "Fucked."
