Ryan shut the door to his brother's office gently and sighed with relief. He didn't believe for a second that Chris would actually punish the Luna, but it was out of his hands now, and he felt a weight lifting off his shoulders thanks to his confession. The thought of stepping away from the Beta role and becoming one of the peons who worked part-time, half-assed patrol shifts was honestly quite invigorating. The desire to gain prestige as an indomitable Beta had abated long ago, and now truly all he cared about in life was his family.

Jogging quickly through the main house of the compound, then racing erratically through the woods to his own home, he was ecstatic when he spotted his gorgeous mate standing on their doorstep. Admittedly, he pounced on her as Rain erupted into laughter. "What's gotten you so riled up?"

Suddenly rabid for her touch, hungry to devour her perfect body, he smirked into her neck. "Where are the pups?"

"Christopher is with Rick and Layla. Rick is doing some kind of science day with the kids," she laughed. "Your precious little princess is fast asleep in her crib, drunk off her last feeding."

He stood and quickly stuck his head into their bedroom, ascertaining that his beloved baby girl was sleeping soundly. Rain wrapped her arms around his chest from behind as he watched little Annabelle sleep. "What's with you, babe?" she inquired softly.

"Do you think she looks like me?" he asked and then laughed at his own ridiculousness.

"Babe," Rain stated firmly, spinning him around to face her. "What's going on with you? I know that Chris' telenovela of a life has finally imploded in on itself and that has made a mess for you to deal with, but please talk to me. You're not you lately."

He walked them over to the sofa, tossed himself down roughly and tugged her into his lap. Laying his head over her chest and listening to the comforting sound of her regular heartbeat, he sighed. "In no particular order: I am exhausted; I am fed up; and I told Chris that I am seriously considering giving up the Beta role."

Rain's jaw dropped in shock as she cupped her hands over his bearded cheeks lovingly. "Is that what you want, babe?"

"I think so." A seriousness clouded over his rich honey eyes as he gazed up into her face with wonder. "I love you more than anything in this world, Rain, and I love our pups just as much. I'm tired of feeling obligated to clean up Chris' endless list of disasters. I don't want to be putting she-wolves in fucking cages and removing their body parts because he can't think beyond his dick."

Tears began to flow from his exhausted and frustrated eyes. "I don't want any of this bullshit anymore, babe. Maybe there was a time when I was younger that I thought being Beta was cool, I don't know, but that time is long gone. Literally all I want now is you and our family. I would rather fill my days with dirty diapers and painting nurseries, than I would listening to Chris bitch and training idiots who don't give a fuck."

Still cupping his face tenderly, Rain leaned forward and pressed a delicate kiss atop his lips. "You need to get some sleep, babe, and then when you're rested, think about what you want to do." She smiled sweetly as she pressed another kiss to the tip of his freckled nose. "And no matter what you decide, I will still love you more than life itself."

"Make love to me?" Ryan pleaded, his eyes still shining with tears. "I need to be inside of you, Rain. I need to feel you around me. Fuck it, I just need you. Please make love to me."

He didn't need to say a single word more, his loving mate quickly removing his shirt and tossing it over the sofa. Within minutes, their bodies were fitted together like the pieces of a puzzle and Rain's lips were pressed lovingly against his neck. "I love you, Ryan. The goddess must love me for giving me such a perfect mate. When I first arrived here, I thought the White Lightning Pack was a fucking nightmare, I really did. But you, this, you are my everything. I don't want to imagine life without you in it, babe."
