In his lap, the Alpha held a dangerously quiet Ellie, who had barely said a peep all day. Her father had dropped her and her brother off, then disappeared quickly back home to care for his mate and their new pup. Now, with the class seated in their circle on the rug, he decided that something had to be done to drag the little she-wolf back out of her shell. He nudged her gently and grinned. "Ellie, why are you so quiet today?"
"Don't wanna talk, Chrissy," she informed him, and then pressed her face back into his chest.
Sitting across the circle beside Sophia, who was patiently allowing her father to hold the other little she-wolf, Val frowned. "She upset because-a mommy."
The Alpha's eyes widened at this. "I thought your mommy was doing great?"
"She screamed a lot," Ellie whispered. "She was bleedings too!"
Isolde was pouring juice at the back of the room and she frowned. "This is why it's poor decision-making to have your pups attend a birth. They're not yet psychologically progressed enough to handle all the emotions that come with such a traumatic experience. This is Parenting 101, is it not?"
Folding napkins and counting out cookies while seated in a chair, Rain eyed the other woman with a definite lack of amusement. Normally, she enjoyed being around Isolde, as the other she-wolf was hyper-intelligent and very sweet, but today she was in no mood for her unwanted opinions. "That was their decision to make for their family. You have no right to judge them."
The blonde looked a bit taken aback at this, and her frown deepened. "Look at their pups. Elinore is clearly traumatized. She's barely spoken two words today and normally she talks over all the others. I'm not judging their family or how much they love their offspring, I am simply saying that it's inappropriate to have pups attend an event that they are psychologically incapable for processing."
"She was crying," Ellie was whispering to the Alpha. "And then the pup cried but it was messy."
Chris wrapped the little girl into his arms tightly and began to slowly rock her. Placing a delicate kiss to her forehead, he smiled comfortingly down at her. "It's okay, Ellie. Your mommy is okay and so is your little sister. Sometimes, when pups are born, that just happens and it's normal." Realizing that none of this would appeal to the confused and frightened little girl of nearly five, he smiled and changed his tactic. "What did your parents name your sister?"
"Mowwy Jane," Val smiled toothily. "I think it pretty."
"It is," Sophia agreed, eyeing her friend a bit giddily.
The Alpha watched the pair and felt his paternal instincts creeping up on him. It wasn't possible for his pup to have a crush at the age of two, right? She was still a baby, she was his baby. Did he have to think of the future already? She was supposed to be promised to another pack, to another wolf, to cement good ties between the two. It was supposed to be so easy, but why was being Alpha never easy? And why was he worrying about any of this when she was just two-years-old? Was it true concern for her future or was he simply exhausted from the stress of having a mate who was could go into labor at any day now?
