Rain had not yet managed to open her eyes, her mind still trapped somewhere between blissful sleep and the shock of awakening in the wee hours of the morning. Lying beneath a sheet naked and silent, she fought to fit each of the puzzle pieces into place. She remembered Ryan helping her to bathe the pups, then putting Christopher and Annabelle to bed. What came afterward was a passionate but languid lovemaking session, and then she had fallen asleep wrapped in the warmth of her mate's arms. So, why did she suddenly feel an emptiness and chill emanating from his side of the bed?
'Babe,' her mate's voice tickled across her senses and filled her wakefulness. 'Rain, do you hear me?'
She knew that she was perfectly capable of communicating with Ryan through their mating mark, but save for a few very random, flirtatious moments, it was something that they simply did not do. The fact that he was missing from their bed and reaching out now frightened her. 'Babe, what's wrong?'
'Stay in the house today,' he urged her. She sensed that he was in his wolf form, trotting along a chain-link fence and sniffing at the air curiously. 'There's been a situation that was reported, a potential threat to the pack. Please don't panic! I'm on patrols until this afternoon while Chris gets the minions organized. When I get home, we will sit down and I will explain everything, okay? But please promise me that you and the pups will stay in the house today?'
'Of course.' She nodded and she knew that he could sense the movement. 'But are you okay? You've been so tired, Ry, and I thought we agreed that you were going to try to take some time for yourself?'
'I realize this is all very cryptic right now, Rain, so just know that I will explain everything as soon as I can. For now, the simplest explanation I can give is that Chris got wind of a credible threat to the pack, and I felt that my energy was better spent keeping the pack safe, keeping you and the pups safe. If I don't do this, goddess knows who will be on patrol and fumbling every single opportunity to thwart a problem. I'm alright, baby girl! Don't worry about me! I'm out here doing what I have to do so that I can sleep at night knowing that you're alright.'
'But you're not sleeping,' his mate taunted him with a sad smile.
She knew that he was displaying a toothy, lupine grin in response. 'I love you, Rain. Get some sleep so you can take care of those beautiful pups in the morning.'
'I love you more,' she promised him before he cut their link and returned his sole focus to keeping their land and pack members safe.
