Chapter 25: Death Bed

Rushing back to Magnolia was a hassle. It took two days to reach the city.

When you arrived at the guild hall, it was full of quiet whispers and the air was thick. Mirajane directed you to the med bay of the guild as soon as she saw you.

When you get to the room, Porlyusica was bent over Makarov who had his eyes closed and was taking long breaths.

She sees you and Erza.

Porlyusica: Makarov, they're here.

He opens his eyes and looks to the door. He was pale compared to what he normally looked like. His eyes had a cloudy tint to them.

Makarov: Took em long enough.

His voice was quiet. It sounded like he struggled to speak.

Erza: What happened to you master?

Porlyusica: His heart problems finally cought up to him.

Porlyusica was always crass but her tone was somber when she said that.

Makarov: I have very important things to say to the both of you.

You and Erza walk up to the side of his bed.

He speaks to Erza first.

Makarov: It took me a long time of pondering about this, but now that my time is approaching, I've finally reached a decision. Erza, I want you to be the next guild master.

Erza shudders with wide eyes.

Erza: I'm gonna be what? Master I don't think I-

He cuts her off by putting his hand.

Makarov: Please listen. I have only so much energy to speak.

He puts down his hand.

Makarov: My decision came down to you and Laxus. I chose you because despite Laxus's change in heart, he still has much to learn about leadership. You constantly lead your team and this guild when I'm gone. Your friends respect you. Your enemies fear you. And this guild loves you. You may still be young, but so was I when I became master. You'll do just fine. You also have Mavis to guide you through hard times.

Erza: I respect your choice master.

She bows.

Makarov: I've already told the guild about it. They agreed with my decision.

He looks at you now.

Makarov: (R/N)... I don't know where to begin with you.

He searches your eyes.

Makarov: Of everyone in this guild, you probably have the most on your plate. So much infact that it can put everybody at risk.

His face takes a somber turn.

Makarov: Make a promise to a dying man that you'll prevail. That you'll stop whatever is coming before it consumes the world. Promise me that whoever gets caught in the crossfire makes it out alive.

You: I promise sir. I'll do what it takes.

You didn't have much else to say.

Makarov's bottom lip started to quiver.
