Relinquish Her

Lana

I wouldn't know what I would've done if Blake hadn't helped me pack. Aidan dropped us at my house, and we threw whatever we could into two bags. I didn't want to add a lot of weight because we'd be driving to Minnesota. My parents knew about it, but Mrs. Gunner asked them July 4th before the whole kidnap happened, so it was understandable that they forgot.

The ring Benny gave me remained in my back pocket when Axel fetched us and when I had dinner at the Gunner's residence. Since our packing dragged a bit, Mrs. Gunner kept aside food for us when she, Axel and Tamia ate. It was kind of her to sit with us at the table while we had her delicious Chicken Piccata. I thought they'd be all over the place to get ready for tomorrow but everyone seemed chilled. Axel and Tamia spoke in the living room while they watched TV, Mrs. Gunner wondered around the kitchen to see if we had snacks for the road tomorrow.

"Blake's told me you only found out a couple of hours ago that you'd be going with." She said then slid into the seat next to me with a smile. "I hope we didn't ruin any future plans you had."

"Not at all Mrs. Gunner, I've just been taking it day by day," I assured her for the millionth time even though she tried to ask indirectly with different questions.

"Okay, well, have you packed for Yale already? I heard Carter's all set."

"Other than my clothing which Blake helped with and a few boxes of unnecessary things...not really."

"Oh wow, then we can't stay long in Minnesota!"

"I wouldn't want you guys to cut time out because of me, I can pack when we get back." I chewed my food slowly, and as I swallowed, I looked up at Blake, "Which is when exactly, if I may ask?"

"Depends how long the trial is, our lawyer reckons a few days." Mrs. Gunner replied then snapped her fingers as if she just remembered something. "Speaking of trials and lawyers, on the news they showed that James guy, he pleaded guilty."

"Momma," Blake spoke up as he glared at his mother. I waved him off with an awkward chuckle.

"No, it's okay Blake. I guess he was just making everyone's lives easier by pleading guilty instead of having a never-ending trial." I nodded even though I didn't know how to feel about it. A part of me liked that it was all over with and he's been sentenced, but I also wanted to witness everything being exposed to James Cornelius in that courtroom.

"Well that's all behind us, and since now we know, we can all have a great time in Minnesota. Apart from the trail part which will probably take a few hours out of the day but that's at least better than here!"

"Momma, please stop." Blake groaned at his mother's attempt to lighten the mood. I turned to her, and we laughed when Blake covered his face with his hands.

"Oh, hush dear, nothing to be embarrassed about." Mrs. Gunner winked at me through her glasses. I smiled then turned back to Blake who stabbed the mushrooms with his fork. "When you're done, get your brother and both of you take all the luggage to the cars."

"What's Tamia gonna' do?" Blake asked as if she was his sister who also had to work. Mrs. Gunner pointed behind us where bags of groceries laid. "She can prepare us food for the road while I show Lana her room for the night."

"I can help too," I spoke up quickly after I finished my food. Blake got up from his seat and took our plates with a slight smirk. Mrs. Gunner scoffed and stood up then disappeared down the hall.
