The Piteous Girl

Benny

Sheriff Willson looked at me, and I saw the sympathy in his eyes. I understood why he wanted me to do it but I couldn't. He must've gotten the message when he slowly nodded, patted me on the shoulder then walked off. I stood for a while and let the fact digest that the girl that I'm in love with, her father wanted us to break up. Now that James was locked up and things were finally over, he wanted her to start fresh in Connecticut. We still could've been a couple but something inside me, made me have second thoughts.

I dragged my feet as I walked back to Lana's hospital room. Carter, Melissa, Nick, and Blake walked out of her room, and it looked like they said goodbye to each other since they gave handshakes and hugs. They didn't see me as I slowly walked toward them, but I hoped they'd walk off because I couldn't face anyone. I wasn't sure if I wanted to see Lana yet. While Blake, Carter, Ethan, Keene, Aidan, and Levi were gone, I got to see her but with everyone else.

Thankfully none of them saw me, and I waited until they got to the end of the hallway and Carter pushed the button for me to go into the room. Lana already had her eyes on me when I entered the room and approached her.

"Hey, how are you feeling?" I asked and wanted to pull the chair closer when I sat down but I couldn't, something stopped me, so there was a space that divided Lana and me.

"Honestly," Lana croaked out then coughed to clear her throat as she continued, "there's this aching feeling inside me..."

"Why?" I demanded as Lana raised a brow, but I quickly shook my head and let out a dry laugh, "I mean like...why? It's over; you're safe and alive while Ja—"

"Uncle Griff...how is he? I asked Melissa and them, but they didn't tell me anything." She frowned then tried to push herself into an upright position.

"He's alright Lana, don't worry, you just need to rest," I said, but she ignored me, and when she placed her palms flat on the mattress and applied pressure, she winced and leaned back into the pillow

"Please, I need to see him you don't know how it felt down there. I-I didn't know anything, and sure I've heard a gunshot before but this...it felt like the gun was right next to my ear."

"Look I'll never know how it felt with what you went through but don't think of that right now. I'm sure Mr. Bronx wants to rest and you should too, Lana."

"A-Alright but if you find out something, you'll tell me, right?" she looked at me with those big blue eyes and slipped her fingers through mine. I flinched, and we looked down at our entwined fingers and how mine remain frozen while Lana tried to find a way to comfort me.
