Trying to Avert My Gaze
Blake
I always remembered October in my house, the autumn breeze that crept under the front and back door, up the wooden staircase and got lost in the hallway. The windows clogged up because of the mist, my first class started at 11:15 am on the gloomy Wednesday morning. Light peeked through the windows of my parents' old room that I've taken, but it wasn't the sun. I heard the kettle go off and knew it was my cue to get up because Vera was already downstairs. Since I owned such a big house, Dmitri suggested I rent it out to other people who went to the same college as we did. We found a noticeboard on campus and contacted this Vietnamese girl, Vera who urgently needed a place. It was easy enough, and very soon, we received a fourth housemate.
"Hey, Vera's making Berry and Yogurt Smoothies, want one?" Ursula knocked on the door after I walked out of the shower in just a towel. I turned, and her eyes widened at the sight of me as she quickly looked away. "Sorry, err...I didn't know you were still err, busy."
"It's cool, and I'm good, I'll just have toast and coffee."
Ursula nodded then made things awkward when she looked around the room as if she had something else to stay. Whatever it was or if it was, she didn't say anything and slowly shut the door. I threw on a band tee, leather jacket, jeans and Doc Martens then went downstairs to join everyone else.
Vera jogged in the morning to the gym and Ursula would fetch her after her lecture then they'd come home, and we'd all have breakfast before we split up again. It was a schedule that worked efficiently so that we wouldn't have to drive up and down with so many vehicles. For a start, Vera didn't have a car, but she did have a job in the afternoon, so she saved up and was grateful for the accommodation so she, usually took care of breakfast. Vera was the fittest Vietnamese chic I'd ever met, who always tried to persuade us into her lifestyle. The least we could do was try the stuff she made, however on this particular morning, I wasn't up for a smoothie.
"What about the old dude from Courage the Cowardly Dog?" Dmitri sat at the table with his arms raised as he looked at Ursula and Vera who squinted at him. "What? No one goes as him for Halloween!"
"Well because he treated Courage like sh*t." Vera bluntly pointed out to which I laughed when I sat next to Dmitri and consumed into my coffee and toast that Ursula placed in front of me.
"Are you guys still deciding what to wear for Halloween?"
"Yes!" Ursula slurped on her smoothie across the table, took the straw out and pointed it at me. "There's a huge Halloween party, and you're definitely coming!"
"Nah, I'm good, I have a lot of work to catch up on." Which was the truth because Axel left the shop in my hands when he wasn't here. I also had the rent to take care of so I was often busy when I came home. Also, on Mondays and Wednesdays, after Dmitri and myself had the same lecture, we'd go down to the shop to work a shift.
