Days passed since Axel's little incident happened in the bathroom and I decided not to question him after court about it. From what Blake and Mrs. Gunner said though, his testimony really made an impact. Dmitri found me in the hallway again and instead of twiddling my thumbs because my battery ran out of my phone, he took me out to lunch. I guess you could say, the café place became our spot. It was convenient because it wasn't far from the courthouse and a few blocks away from our hotel. I sat close to our usual spot, in the back of the café by the wall where my crutches leaned. Dmitri excused himself and went to the restrooms. Our food half eaten while I idly slurped my milkshake and twirled the object wrapped around my index finger. It sat at the bottom of my backpack the entire time, and I had forgotten about it until this morning when I decided to clean it out. I thought I left it in Illinois, but I guess it'll always be with me.
"Whatcha got there?" Dmitri's voice sounded like an alarm as if I'd be caught doing something terrible. I flinched as he came and sat back in front of me.
"Err...this is err..." I stumbled with my words as I frantically tried to pull it off my finger. With no such luck and Dmitri's strange look, on me, I sighed and said, "My ex-boyfriend gave this to me while we were still dating."
"Ex?" Dmitri's eyebrows shot to the roof as he pulled his chair closer and disregarded his food. I forced out a laugh as he made a steeple with his fingers and said, "Do tell the story of how this boyfriend of yours became an ex and why you still have the ring he gave you."
"I don't know, I guess I forgot to throw it away, but I did! Then my friend picked it up and returned it to me which I'm sort of glad she did."
"Why? Are you getting back with him?" Dmitri asked to which I slowly shook my head to because Benny made that very clear. Dmitri reached out, and I effortless pulled off the ring and gave it to him. He observed it for a while but I know, he realized something when his smiled faded and he said, "He has the other half, doesn't he?"
"Yeah and he's still wearing it, so I thought, why not?"
"He gave you half a heart, damn like he knew it was coming." Dmitri shook his head in amusement to which I pursed my lips and snatched the ring from him. I ran my thumb along the edge of the ring and took in its coldness and odd point because the other half wasn't attached to it. I imagined him right now, wearing the other half as a necklace, hard against his chest while he hung out with Liam and Nick. I assumed they played basketball in Benny's backyard with the sun scorched down on them. He'd run his fingers through his brown hair to avoid the sweat that ran down his smooth skin that I once upon a time, touched endlessly.
