The Cadaverous Man on the Screen

Lana

The visitation room blurred when I walked into the room. Things weren't exactly easy with no glasses or contacts but I saw enough to get me through the day. After I met Trudy things became easier.

There were pros and cons to Trudy's group. Pro was that I didn't have to sit alone when we ate and whenever other women tried to get to me, despised that Trudy chose me; Joey or neck tattoos had my back. Con was that Redhead told me everyone wanted to be with Trudy because she had connections, not only on the outside but in the Department of Corrections since her boyfriend was there and died there. I already made enemies that I didn't even know.

I walked the rows of visitors with my head high and shoulders back. The trial started soon, and I was confident. Yet when I stopped by my visitors today, I knew I had to face them first. Again, they sat at the opposite end while I went solo. No hugs exchanged because Keene sensed the tension. I specifically asked him to come. Clarissa gripped onto his side when Keene leaned forward to talk to me.

"H—Hey, how are you? I know I should've visited sooner, but I had work and the visiting times just didn't match." Keene's lips moved, but I hardly paid attention as I tried to find the right words. "Lana, you asked me to come so..."

"I hope you don't mind that I'm here too." Clarissa's bright smile caught my attention. Her pearly white teeth against that soft skin. Her fur coat made me shiver because I couldn't wear something that elegant and thick in here. All I had was an orange outfit to make me stand out even more. When the corners of her mouth dropped I blinked. They looked at me as if something was wrong, everything was wrong. Keene opened his mouth to speak, but I stopped him.

"Kennedy Stoner." Keene froze. Clarissa tilted her head and raised a brow.

"Huh? What did you say?"

"Where did you get that from?" Keene asked before I answered Clarissa. She turned to him and it's as if she wasn't here. His crystal blue eyes might as well send me in a daze. The little hairs on my arms rose. Keene's never looked at me—at anyone like that before.

"Is that your real name? Kennedy Stoner."

"It was... but I changed it when I left the foster home." Clarissa slowly pulled her arm away from Keene as if he instantly became a stranger. Keene didn't notice and leaned forward. "I didn't tell anyone that. How do you kn—"

"Y—Your mom... she's in here." I didn't realize my voice broke until I cleared my throat. Keene blinked and straightened in his seat. Clarissa slightly gasped but covered her mouth.

"How do you know that? How do you know she's my mother?"

"From what she's told me and from what you've told me, the stories match. The last names match and she's got your eyes, nose and that sharp but intelligent look."

"Lana you better not be messing with me."

"I'm not Keene. Your mother is here. No wonder you couldn't find her, she's been on one hell of a ride in here."

"Okay, well..." Keene nervously laughed and finally acknowledged Clarissa. They held hands, and she pecked his cheek. That tiny gesture of affection made my stomach twist in jealousy. It's almost been a week, and I craved Levi's presence. "What is she like? Wh—what's her name? The foster home told me her name, but that was years ago..."
